Ok so a friend of mine had her iphone 4 stolen! she had bought it online and had it jailbroken and what not but shes worried that now the thief will be able to access her emails and texts and pictures and that?

What she was wondering is if its a jailbroken iphone 4 with a passcode can it be hacked into and can her emails and texts be seen or will the person have to do a factory restore on it and if so does that delete all the memory?

    Cheers Guys

Unless they break the passcode they will have to restore to get the iphone working.
Tell her to change the password on her email account just incase they do crack the passcode
and any other accounts she has linked to the iphone.

Rebel, she has changed all her email passwords and that but just hates the thought of somebody looking through her pictures and texts...... so unless they break the passcode on it then they would have to totally restore it to use it again????? which would wipe off all the details on the phone!!! plus if she gets a new iphone she can restore the old data from her laptop to the new phone?

How many users????? Anna???? im assuming she had her iphone stolen too!!!!! Poor girl :(

    Thanks guys,

It is not an easy task to break into the iphone if it has a passcode.
99.99% of the time they will just restore it in itunes to get access to it and use the phone.

    Yes.

There are ways to access the information on the phone, but it's a bit laborious and outside the skillset of your average scummer. They're only interested in flipping the phone for cash, they're not going to spend time accessing someone's messages and emails. In fact, it's probably in some dodgy mobile phone shop, wiped and ready for sale already.

Its a longshot but if she had "Find my iphone" she could try a remote wipe, after seeing if the phone can be located:

If the person who stole the phone manages to get into the phone and delete the find my phone app does that mean it cannot be found or is the app just used to set up the whole process.

    yeah, same story

just an fyi, you can connect it to a computer and use iphonebrowser to get the sms.db file and the robber can see anything they want.

Tell her to ring the network she was using the iPhone on. The network will have the IMEI stored on file and might be able to blacklist (block) the phone. Just so nobody gets away with it. :)

But yeah if she buys a new one, iTunes will prompt her to restore to her latest backup, click yes and everything will be back to the way she had it before it was stolen.

There are ways around the pass code lock to look at info on the phone, but as someone mentioned earlier, they wouldn't of stolen it to snoop through her photo's/texts, so I don't see why they would bother really.

The app is only used to find other devices associated with your account. Find My iPhone is set up in Settings.

Its always annoyed me that the option to turn that on and off isn't protected. Its as simple as turning it off, rendering the whole thing pointless. Same goes for restore etc.

I think Find My iPhone (Enable / Disable Aspect) and Restore should require a password to do. Would seriously cut down on the theft of iPhones if you couldn't restore them so easily in my eyes.
