Funny and all but seems about as spontaneous as that time Vladimir Putin shot an escaped tiger.

nice photo stunt but thats probably the only street in vilnius where you cant park and has the best cycle lane. Mr mayor needs to educate cyclists bout cycling on the footpath and fixing the road surfaces for bikes and putting in decent cycle lanes. Also a serious lack of cycle helmets being used

It was staged, apparently, using a scrapped car, according to this report anyway. It's less clear from the Irish Time report.

Anyway, whatever happened to fining people and ultimately confiscating their cars where necessary? Smashing a car makes for some good photos and some decent rabble rousing but it would clearly be a stupid and pointless exercise - it hardly frees up the bike lane after all, it's just now filled with a big heap of pig iron, with glass scattered round it, making it even more of a hazard and more difficult to move. Why not just prise open a window and leave an incontinent dog in there for a few minutes, I'll bet that would deter offending drivers...

Political showmanship. Is there an election coming up soon?

All that's needed is to enforce the existing laws.

Publicity stunt, but still pretty funny

Cycling mayor drives tank over illegally parked cars
Mayor of Vilnius strikes devastating blow in battle between cyclists and drivers (with video)

The eternal battle between bicycle and car has taken a disturbing turn for drivers after the mayor of Vilnius unveiled his new policy for keeping the Lithuanian capital’s cycling lanes clear: crushing offending cars with an armoured vehicle.

In a video (above) posted on the city council’s website, mayor Arturas Zuokas, who is possibly more keen on cycling than even London mayor Boris Johnson, complains about the owners of luxury cars who believe they are above the law and constantly park in bicycle lanes.

Finally, he sees a Mercedes, which is promptly written off with what he calls a 'tank', although it looks more like an eight-wheeled armoured vehicle. He says: "That's what will happen if you park your car illegally."

Using the weaponry of the States army for political showmanship doesn't always go to plan. See case in point .............:D
