Another Excel Q re: charts

For some reason, Excel (2010) won't accept a series for the y-axis where the series input is in merged cells. I get the error:

"The reference is not valid. References for titles, values, or sizes must be a single cell, row or column."

When I input the data in the green box as the values for the x axis, they are accepted without error even though those values are in merged cells. Then I get the error when I try to put the values in the red box as the Y series.

Anyone know a way around this other than copy/pasting the data into unmerged cells?
