Death Wish?

Anyone else have the death wish mentality sometimes?

Like on a plane, I imagine the chaos of an engine blowing and me just sitting back and lighting up a cigarette while looking out the window.
Or on my moped when I've forgotten my helmet or had a few beers in some of the most dangerous roads in the world, I sometimes wonder what would happen if that truck hit me. I nearly crash everyday because the roads are just that dangerous and have came off a few times but I don't even flinch anymore if a car misses me by a few inches. My friend crashed earlier.. Friends crash every week over here and we're just lucky.

It's weird.. The thought of it doesn't bother me when I'm in the situation.

i know what you're saying. when i sit on a chair and lean back, the feeling of "oh shit i'm going to die" when you go a little bit too far back. i dont get that anymore. now i just light a smoke and let it happen...

    Your hardcore op.

Maybe you should take up heroin as a hobby

you'd probably get fined for smoking on a plane!

Looking left , then right , then left again before crossing a busy road especially in front of parked cars is probably the main reason why I'm still around .

Yep, it's a difficult question to answer all right.

I think "Hanoi, VietFukingNam" is giving people the wrong impression!

Apart from the desire to jump off tall buildings when Im up on on (I dont want to go jump off one now or anything) then no, not really.

OP I think I know what you are talking about.

Especially with the Plane one. Its like you are accepting your faith and are just going to enjoy the adrenaline rush that goes along with dying in a plane crash. Its like sitting back and just watching the distruction on fold you can't do anything about it. You're going to die. Might as well live your last few moments enjoying being part of a disaster.

You should read some Chuck Palahniuk novels.

I sometimes get this when in cars as well. Its like... if I'm going to die, I'm going to die and I'll be experiencing something that will make my heart leap out of its chest. Plus I'm pretty sure its a form of dissociation.... Everything is serene cause there is feck all you can do.

Sometimes if I'm by a large height I consider what it would be like to jump off... Not in a suicidal way or anything :o.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Well same as, nothing suicidal.. Just a disconnection from it.

When I stand at the top floor of Cineworld on Parnell Street in Dublin and look over the railings all the way down to the ground floor I often wonder how many children's lives would be scarred forever if they had to watch my bloated body tumbling tragically through the air before squelching on to the floor of the foyer below, blood, guts and the remnants of my pasta lunch spraying everywhere.

Then I think.... "Nah, I'll just go for a pint instead."

I always gets this waiting for trains. There's a tiny, tiny, tiiiiiiny part of my brain that goes 'I wonder what it'd be like to jump now', then the rest of it goes 'WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING YOU NUTTER?!'

I get what you mean about the plane alright. I get the same feeling standing at the edge of cliffs and things like that, wondering what it would be like to jump. I've even gone as far as to make an agreement with myself that if I ever decide to kill myself because I get some terrible disease that will just kill me slowly and painfully that I will do it that way.

I think everybody stands on the edge of a cliff or looks down from a large building or bridge and thinks '' that's the end down there if I jump '' ..then the moement passes

Rememebr being on ships safety at sea course which was held on top of the Liver buildings in Liverpool and getting a serious bout of vertigo when I looked down over the top

( off topic but great view from up there , you can see right over to Wales ) )

If it's my time, it's my time. I don't overtly go out of my way to tempt fate, but I take reasonable precautions with reasonable expectations.

Is this you deciding whether to sink the meat plunger with an open wound?

I don't mean a death wish from a cliff or building... I mean doing stuff that may result in death but having no feeling of fear or worry. You have full control when it comes to jumping but the consequences of driving dangerously or sitting on fuked plane aren't controllable. The "fuk it" attitude towards that is what I would call a death wish.

I think.. I googled the term beforehand wanting to read about it but couldn't find anythin.

Like getting in a car with a pissed driver I understand now.

I smoke cigarettes and have regularly been a passenger with drunk drivers. Don't think death wish is quite the right term for what you are talking about though.

Very possibly a different term.. Never been in a car with a drunk driver. But then again, barely been in a car in nearly a year and I've changed a lot.

I recognize this sense, the sense of an ultimate relief, there is nothing more you can do so you no longer have to worry about anything.
Thing is you have probably felt this way once and its like your searching for that sensation again and you associate that sensation with the acceptance of a your faith in a no way out situation..

I got this quite a lot in dreams oddly enough, never really researched it or thought about it until i read this post.
Its very likely something related to serenity.. i think monks and such practice ways to feel like this while sitting down :P

I get the urge every so often to step out in front of a car or bus. it's weird, cause i'm getting closer to doing it I feel. but then i dunno, maybe that's not what you're talking about :o

I can identify with you completely AbG :)

I'm not sure I want to elaborate completely though. It's a pretty intimate thing..isn't it?

If you've ever sailed on a ferry in winter on the Irish sea while the ships being pounded by waves, you might think the captain had a death wish in mind for sailing in the first place

I get them all the time.....turning your car into oncoming traffic is kinda counterproductive tho! :pac:

Think I get what you mean, OP. Often think how easy it would be to fall out of my bedroom window onto the concrete below. Or if I fell off the kerb, under a truck, or something. It's not got anything at all to do with wishing to be dead, just the realization of how easily and quickly it could happen.

    Hehe

I never put you down as a moped guy!.

Well I drive the definition of a boyracer moped here... Just like I drove a Bmw E30 in Ireland. Everyday, local guys are pointing at it and doing wheelie mimes. The thing's a fuking rocket and so hard to find that I've 3 guy local guys willing to buy it for more than I paid for it. :D
    Rocket.

A good definition of the death wish is when I starting this thread, posted for a while and then drove like a maniac to my friends house pissed with no helmet. I knew I would be doing that and that's why I thought of starting the thread.
