SRI is easy calving and good quality animal. I've seen good calves off SFL too

I have used all SFL this year - just for sheer handyness. I find him easy calved - most cows without assistance. My cows breed good calves off him too!

FHZ on 3/4 continental type cows. I started using AZL (Ross Alo) on the plainer type cows this year. Anybody have calves from him on the ground?

I have used AZL last year and was a bit disappointed - no problem calving just the calves were small and plain
    how do you like FHZ?

I used him on a few cows last year. Very happy with calves from my muscular type cows, 3/4 bred etc...but on a plain cows, calves lack muscle.
Disapointed to hear that about AZL. I was hoping he would bring a lot of muscle, more so than FHZ.
It is always worth trying these new AI bulls on only a few cows first to see what they are like.

I sold 3 FHZ weanlings last week. One bull and two heifers. All about 360 Kgs. Heifers made 960E each, both from good continental cows. The bull 760E, from a plainish black Limousin. All were March/April born.

I sold one ELZ bull the week before the oct bank holiday. He weighed 340kg and made 1000 euro. He was out of my best 3/4 bred lm cow

I have 2 more ELZ weanling heifers kept both out of black lm cows which were both out of the same angus cow. Both calves are short and low to the ground. neither will make good cows or beef animals by the looks of things.

I also have one FHZ weanling heifer out of a muscly CF52 cow. Rubbish calf aswell.

How do you mean rubbish? Did the calf not grow, poor conformation or all of the above!? CF52 didn't bring much milk.

She was a lovely calf but as the summer went on she went back. She didnt grow much. Very low to the ground compared to other heifers that are younger than her in the pin. She is light boned aswell. She has no muscle showing which is probably a good thing in terms of breeding potential. She might be late developer though. If i wasn't vaccinating for worms through out the summer I would put her poor form down to that but she just doesn't have the make up of they type of calf you would expect out of this particular cross.

Her mother has an unreal amount of milk for a CH but her mother was a shorthorn so maybe that's where she got the milk from. I milk her every year after she calves so I have a stock of beastings in the freezer. Maybe its the quality of the milk thats the problem and not the quantity?
