Gym Membership

There's a good chance I'll be starting in Galway this year. In UCC, gym membership comes 'free' after you pay the student fee at the start of the year. Is it the same in NUIG, or will I have to buy membership separately?

Also, do you find that the gym/staff/opening hours/etc are good?

    Thanko! :)

It's not the same in NUIG, the membership fee for a year (12 months) is €250 for students. Unfortunately they don't do a term membership of 9 months, although there has been talk of introducing that in future. It is pricey but it's a good gym, still nearly brand new and it usually isn't jammed or anything.

The opening hours are okay, 7am til 10pm during the week. The weekends aren't great, think it's only open from 9am til 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. I find the staff to be grand, although I've heard others say differently!

Yeah, the gym is grand. It can get busy in the evening and the free weights section is sometimes crowded but there's a pool, gym, sauna and so on which is fairly handy.

Staff are all sound in my experience.

*cough* Effective price is €350 a year with that stupid levy :p

OP, everyone has to pay €100 beans annually whether they use the facility or not.

Well I've heard a lot of people say that, but really the €100 (which, to clarify for the OP, is included in your registration fee) doesn't just "go to the gym" - it goes to the college to pay for the construction of not only the gym, but also the new Aras na Mac Léinn building. This was decided a few years ago with a student referendum. The €100 is not going into the Kingfisher's pockets.

I guess that doesn't really make forking out €100 extra euro a year any easier, but that's what it's used for.

off topic i know mod, but what are the alternatives? be looking for gym with a decent free weights section, sauna/steam room, pool and jacuzi. Quiet is good but will settle for good over quiet.

Also do they do 3 monthly memberships?

no. But the student price for Pay as you Go is very reasonable. €5 for gym or swim and €7.50 for both (but they never check so it's just €5 if you're not honest).

You are restricted in the times you can go though.

has the price gone up to 350?? **** that! not joining up again , wasnt a great gym , free weights area was always too busy with time wasters who would sit around and take 15 mins to complete 3 sets :mad::mad:

plus 350 is way out of my price range at the mo :(

    edit: staff are sound though!

Yeah, off peak times. I dont remember what they are because I was a member. There was an hour in the morning, 12-2pm and then something in the evening.
