my friend is having a problem with her windows 7 laptop, basically she clicked on something to make it go faster but does not know what exacty she did,

now certain key functions are not running including wireless so troubleshooting won't work, and her personal settings have changed (the windows task bar was pink and is now grey and the windows logo has changed) couldn't adjust brightness on the desk top (only the buttons on the keyboard could)...etc

i have never used windows 7 (im still on xp :o ) so i have no clue as to how it all works.

anyone here able to help us a: figure out what she did and whats wrong? and b: how to fix it or get it fixed?

Press Start/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSZEkH5ke_fxUmzkJ8-tuhE6E4XDo2VYz5DNnTeUuWiheHHazGh1w and type "System Restore" > Press Enter

Follow the on-screen guide to roll back the system settings to an earlier time, before your friend tried to change the settings.

The system will reboot and the settings should be back to normal. None of her files, photos, music, etc. will be affected, even if they were changed since the problem happened.

hee hee thats exactly what happened when i tried to google the problem nobody seems to have issues nevermind this issue with windows 7! :pac:

and system restore is the first thing i did try but there was nothing there to back up to! :(

i also should mention she has photos she wants to keep on there... i have told her to get an external and put them on it this morning ....

Well, who told her to click something and said it would make things go faster? You need to find out what she did in order to undo it, and what gave her the notion.

nobody told her she did it of her own accord!

what gave her the notion was her son watching a movie and it going slow due to processes.

if she just killed processes, all she should have to do is reboot

Any chance she did that speed boost thingy? Windows uses a USB drive for some files to speed up the system (or thats how I remember it was meant to be in vista).

She probably clicked on one of those speed up your pc ad's on the internet these can be malware and dangerous seems like the most likely case.

I doubt if anything thats intergrated into the OS would have done so much damage.

    That'd be my bet too.

Might be an idea to just do a system restore to previous day of the mad clicking.

I think he's already tried that but there were no restore points to roll back to.

Use the System File Checker to verify that the original Windows system files haven't been altered.

Run virus and anti-malware scans, asap.

Probably won't fix most of her symptoms (but might), but could stop things getting a lot worse. Also tell her that if some stranger rings telling her they can fix it (even if they say they're from Microsoft) to hang up.
