So I've a wedding to go to on Friday and I cannot afford a new dress. I don't have much at home that would be appropriate though. Would this dress be too dark for a summer wedding?

If it's not too dark, what would you wear with it to brighten it up a bit? Thanks!

    I think it's too dark :o
I don't think you'd be able to brighten it up much tbh as all the colours in it are so dark, maybe nude shoes would work but I'm not sure!

Glitzy or nude shoes and a light coloured pashmina type thing (is that gold stitching in the dress? can't tell!) will lift it. I don't think it's too dark at all.

Could you make a new sash in the colour of the flower stitching? Then you could match shoes/pashmina to the new sash. Can't tell if it's permanently attached, but if it's just sewn on you should be able to pick the stitches pretty easily.

The flower stitching is silver. The wedding is on Friday and I'm working all week so I won't have time to find material for a new sash, I'd say. I might just wear something else, because I don't have anything that's silver either.

    /grumble

    Thanks though!

I think the dress is fine! Lots of people wear black/other dark colours to weddings because they don't want a dress with any white/cream.
Chances are it'll be a rainy, cloudy day anyway!

I'd wear it! I wore a similar style black dress with red hearts to a May wedding and didn't feel self conscious at all.

Although it's really dark you'd be be surprised, lots of people wear really dark colours to weddings. I think wear it if you love it, whenever I haven't worn what I've really wanted to to a wedding because of perceived etiquette I've ended up seeing someone in something very similar and feeling like a right tit for not wearing what I wanted!

Plus the important question is what would the bride think? Is she a mate? I won't give a damn what anyone would wear to my wedding as long as they a) are comfortable and b) look fabulous! And the dress is definitely fabulous ;)

I wouldn't say the dress is too dark. The colour looks fab! I'd go for it! There are always people in dark colours at weddings. I wouldn't wear all black, but I don't see anything wrong with dark colours.

Love the dress and you could definitely wear it to an August wedding.
I wore a black dress to a wedding at the end of April and i wasnt at all out of place. Lots of other people there in dark colours. Also considering wearing it to a wedding at the end of August.

    Go for it!!!

I think its gorgeous, petticoats look awesome with those dresses so if you have or can get one go for it! I don't think you should be trying to "brighten it up", you'd be better off getting accessories that properly match the dress.

Thanks everyone! I do have a petticoat to go with it, so it looks really cool on. I'm conscious of having put on a few pounds recently too, and that's probably the most forgiving dress I own. I'm going to line up a few of my dresses and decide tomorrow, but I might just stick with that one if you all think it's okay!
