Injured Moore set for Tuesday operation
    By Paul Eacott 5:55PM 31 JUL 2011

RYAN MOORE will have an operation on Tuesday on the shoulder and thumb he injured in a fall at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday.

The three-time champion jockey broke his humerus and thumb in a fall which looks certain to have brought about a premature end to his challenge for a fourth title.

Moore remains in hospital after being brought down when riding the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Verdant in the 1m6f handicap.

Different specialists are required to operate on the Derby-winning jockey, with Tuesday the first day that they are both available.

Moore's father, Gary, said on Sunday: "He went in to have his thumb pinned and his shoulder pinned last night but there was an accident in the area so they couldn't do it.

"The injury is worse than they first thought and there were two options - they could do the operations separately or wait until the two specialistswere available at the same time, and the first time they were both available is on Tuesday. He will have to have pins in his shoulder and pins in his thumb."

Moore's enforced absence has resulted in champion jockey Paul Hanagan being cut to 4-6 by Coral to retain his title. Silvestre de Sousa, his nearest pursuer, is 9-4, with Kieren Fallon 8-1 to gain a seventh championship.

According to Horse and Hound he could be out for the rest of the year:
Jockey Ryan Moore could be out until next year after injury at Goodwood
    1 August, 2011

Three-times champion Flat jockey Ryan Moore could be out of the saddle until 2012 after breaking his shoulder and thumb in a three-horse pile-up at Goodwood on Saturday (30 July).

Racehorse Captain John Nixon broke a leg in running, unseating jockey Chris Caitlin, which brought down Moore's mount Verdant. Activate, ridden by Jamie Spencer was also brought down. Both other horses and Caitlin were uninjured, Spencer is taking a couple of days off with bruising.

Moore, who is third in the jockeys' standings for the championship, was treated on course before being taken to hospital in Chichester. He was later transferred to the John Radcliffe in Oxford and is due to be operated on tomorrow (Tuesday 2 August).

Moore hopes to be fit to ride Workforce in the Arc at Longchamp in October but the injury is worse than first thought and that is looking unlikely.
