I watched the 1987 tour, I was only 12 then. Stephen Roche won.

Does anyone have any links to Stephens bike in 1987, was it steel, Aluminium or Carbon ?
What kind of components did it have ? What did it weigh ?

They didn't have carbon back then, or steel or aluminium. I believe it was made of wicker.

I think a Boardsie built up a replica of his TdF winning bike & posted some pics on here.

He did and had it autographed by S.R., if I'm not mistaken.

As far as I recall, he was on a Battaglin steel frame. Hand built wheels, C-Record components.

Indeed. A Battaglin Frame built with Columbus SLX tubing with Campag C-Record with the dealta brakes.

Nerd Alert. He ran delta's for his Giro win, switched to regular Calipers for the Tour, and then back to Delta's for the World championships. Why, I don't know.

In the his book 'My Road to Victory' there are several pictures of him in the TdF and Giro where he is riding Delta's AND ordinary calipers in both tours.
    Nerd Alert: Cancelled :p

I gotta say that I have heard a lot of comments about them being crap but when I had a set I had absolutley no issues with them at all. A bit of a pig to set up but stopping power was really good ( I should know- I am a big fooker and descend like the devil himself) both in the wet and dry.

Well he's half right. Don't think there's a picture of him riding regular Calipers in the Giro. (could be wrong again though).

On another note, was there a reason to switch between both at the tour? Something to do with stage profile perhaps????

Admittedly that foto wasnt in the book but I knew he had ridden both styles of brakes in both Giro and TdF.
I think that bike (with the Delta brakes) is possibly one of the nicest bikes ever. To me its on a par with Perico's Pinarello from the same era and EM's as ridden by the 7-Eleven squad.

Jean Francois (Jeff) Bernard was lined up as Hinault's successor. He was the reason Greg Lemond and Andy Hampsten left La Vie Clair. Super rider but fragile.
Now a renowned "Bon Vivour" smoking and enjoying all.
Bernard Tapie bought him a Porche after his stage win in 1986.

That picture by Graham Watson is one of my favourites of all time. That Pinarello was and is absolutely gorgeous.

Look had built a bike with Carbon tubing and steel lugs in the early 80s for the badger.

As had Carlton in the late 60's for the Raleigh pro team (selected riders only and mostly domestic pros)

    Roche Worlds Winning Bike 2.JPG

Seen in a basement garage in Antibes yesterday:-
Worlds winning bike 1987 complete with Campag Delta brakes said to be excellent in some conditions but not in others. Also understood to be spare bike from 1987 TdF.

Does anyone know why Stephen Roche rode a Battaglin bike? Did the Carrera team ride Battaglin?

    I guess that is Stephen's garage. :)

I looked up Giovanni Battaglin's page on Wiki. He won the Vuelta and Giro in 1981. The Giro started three days after the Vuelta.
I knew Battaglin was a good climber. In the 1979 Tour de France he figured on the two stages to Alpe d'Huez, 7th and 5th, and won the Polka Dot that year.

    .

Yes Battaglin supplied bikes to the carerra team that year.

It's one of those brands that died out when aluminium and carbon frames became more popular.
