Problem with cd drive not working

I have recently had my Acer laptop repaired and all hardware re-installed. My cd drive shows up on the control panel but when I try to play or burn a cd with windows media player, it says I must install a cd drive/burner! I've tried uninstalling and re-booting and removed the upper filter limit but nothing has worked. The guy who fixed it was expensive and don't really want to have to go back to him. Is there anything obvious I am not trying??

    Many thanks for any advice!

BTW I have Windows Vista and use firefox if any of that makes a difference.

Out of principle I would bring it back to the guy that "fixed" the laptop and get him to fix the problem and since it's his fault you won't have to pay for it or if he asks for money just refuse to pay him for fixing something he broke!

If you want to get it done sometime this century, it's probably just the CD drive wasn't put back in correctly. Try gently pushing it in from the outside to see will it slide into place. Or it could be that the guy who installed Windows didn't install the drivers needed. Look up the manufacturers website of your laptop to find the drivers for your CD drive and install them.

Bring it back and tell the geek to repair it properly!
