I read some of the older threads dealing with this company but was wondering if anyone is using their two-way BB lately and if they recommend it as a viable alternative for those of us unable to avail of decent BB via more conventional means. Their one-way option doesn't appeal in the slightest.

I am particularly interested because their website suggests they're an inexpensive Satellite BB provider offering (apparently) unlimited downloads per month with no fair usage policy!! - if only other companies were so generous, eh:)

    https://ie.skydsl.eu/index.php?c=home

Niall Quinn's Q-Sat seemed good initially, but when I discovered they only offer a 2 gig download limit per month - regardless of which package you took - I quickly forgot about them and continue looking around.

This SkyDSL might be the answer to cheap Satellite BB, but the old adage "if it's too good to be true, then it probably isn't" might also be the case here.

Please post this sat nonsense in the right place where it belongs the midband forum.

Satellite is not broadband and never will be no matter what marketing rubbish you hear

Thanks for your input. However, if, and only if the mods feel the discussion of satellite BB belongs elsewhere, then I'll gladly oblige.

On further looking into this company it seems they are using the Tooway service, yet, according to their website are providing unlimited downloads with no fair usage policy.

That's complete nonsense as you well know

It may well be "nonsense," or it may not. But I do not know for a fact that it is and this is why I am seeking advice from those who may currently be with them in the hope they can substantiate the claims by SkyDSL or otherwise.

My existing BB situation is pretty desperate, which is why I am looking for a BB company that can provide me with half decent BB speeds and monthly download allowance at a reasonable price. Others are fortunate in that they live in areas where speeds in excess of 8 Meg is the norm; however, where I am I can only get less than a quarter of a Meg.

Here’s usual example of my BB speed from a few moments ago. Not sure why it says Dundalk when I am in Co. Tipperary, perhaps my connection is just so bad the speed test site can’t differentiate from one location to another.

Satellite is not the solution to your problem. Sat is only useful if you are in the Sahara desert or somewhere equally forsaken. Download caps are paltry typically 4-8G per month and the ping is awful in the region of 1200ms, so no use for VOIP or gaming. Even crap DSL is far better than sat.

You'd be better off starting with diagnosing what's wrong with your dsl.
How about starting with your line stats and people can tell you speeds your line can handle.
    Do you have an alarm?
Do you have filters on the telephone lines in the house?
Is the modem plugged into the main socket?

    and so on

    Thanks for that.

I am told by all those companies I have contacted, those that can provide a land line service, that my telephone line can only handle up to 1 Meg. If I got that speed, or even anywhere near it I'd be happy enough.

I do have an alarm system, a wireless one. I have turned this off and still the problem remains.

I have removed all filters too, to no avail.

My land line service is probably the worst in the area.

All phone lines NEED filters, it's not an option and is a terrible idea to leave them off, all lines including alarms need a filter.

I'd plug my phone into the master socket and makes some calls because if your line is noisy or the quality is bad then you can complain to Comreg about the quality of the voice service...do NOT mention broadband.

Seriously you need to give us the line stats from your modem too...

How do I get the line stats from the modem?

Incidentally, there isn't a problem with the phone line in respect to making and receiving calls, at least not that I have noticed.

Actually parts of the Northern edge have 10GHz 12Mbps Fixed Wireless. Big pole, no trouble with LOS.

South of Sahara they are into fibre these days, number of VSAT customers falling.
