I just finished my LC in June and I have been looking for a job all summer, in town and places that I can get to by bus. I was working all last year in a coffee shop in town on Saturdays but I was laid off just before LC. I know a lot of people come out of 6th year just like me looking for work so I decided to get level 2 HACCP training so maybe I would stand out (I've mostly been looking for work in restaurants, cafes, delis etc), but I haven't gotten a single reply, even from places who were looking for staff or any online applications like mcdonalds or kfc. I'm wondering how can I even get an interview or trial period at a place. It's impossible to get to talk to managers so I can't really make an impression. Help!?! Thanks guys.

Do you know anyone who knows anyone who's working a place with lots of staff (and thus lots of turnover)?

Personal connections are normally the best way to get in.

By the time LC was finished the summer jobs would be all taken, and by this time of the summer, given the poor weather, the economy etc, it is more likely that jobs will be finishing rather than starting. If you are going to college and want to work while you are there, you should maybe be looking for something now, for when the school students start going back.

Back in my day you had to have your job sorted well before the mocks or you'd be sitting on your hands all summer.

You'll apply for hundreds (no exaggeration) of jobs before you'll even so much as hear back from any for interview. 5 applications this late in the summer is no use at all.

Thanks, guys. Unfortunately, I don't know someone working in a place with lots of staff. I suppose I do have an edge on secondary students, I'll just have to keep trying

No offence but there are 450,000 people unemployed.....long term unemployment is up 40%...the days of doing your lc and walking into a job are long gone...you are now in the real world where supply is outstripping demand and I'm afraid your at the bottom of the ladder in terms of job hunting...See how you feel in 6-8 months if you still haven't got a job...That's when the anger and frustration kicks in and you realise just how bad a state the country is in.....HAPPY TUESDAY:)

And out of those 450,000 people who are unemployed I can safely say in my opinion at least half choose not to work. By various reasons either by being young people out of school who choose to go on welfare immediately and believe me I know enough guys who choose this route, parents who would rather be at home or simply people who complain about the recession and their unemployment but do absolutely noting to improve their circumstances.

I believe people should stop complaining and make their own opportunity's. My boss an owner of three businesses hasn't had a single CV in the past year I approached him looking for work and I was trialed I got it now I manage one of his businesses. He was talking to two of his suppliers and they haven't got a single job application in the past year, and these are big wholesalers.

My advice to you is to be persistent, don't give in try get connections and maybe expand from the deli's, cafes & restaurants jobs you've been trying to get. Although I'd say if your looking for a summer job, its far to late most employers would of wanted people for the busiest month being July.
