9900u8.jpgddnzer.jpgi had made another trap but because the doors were made from wood and weldmesh they were heavy and wernt closing propaly.
anyway i got a call bird off a man as i was having no luck catching one after a pine marten killed the last one.
set it up friday evening and when heading to work saturday morning i had caught a bird, was going to keep it as callbird for my other trap but didnt have time to set it up.got a call from the father around 10 to say he had seen bird in it but then noticed later the bird had managed to escape trough the door that wasnt closing fully:o
came home today and noticed a bird around cage, stayed in the van and after a while the bird came back down from the trees and started hoping around the cage.this went on for about 20 minutes (might invest in a side entry trap) and he set off one door then flew down into the other ,the perch didnt colapse :eek:and started to eat the callbirds bread:eek:
so i made some noise and he flew off,i then set the perchs as light as possible and had to do a wee job.came back about 15 minutes later and had caught him so had to run and get somthing to keep door up so he didnt escape:D

will post pictures of the door tomorrow.ps johngalway im never using weldmesh again,:D i ran out of stuff from an 8X4 sheet and the thing weighs a ton.it must be lighter stuff your using

*coughcough* I suggest your problem isn't weldmesh related :D

I also always double spring each door.

When I say make them from weldmesh I mean:

Can't learn ye anything since they done away with the corporal punishment :pac: :p

I've both types, wooden framed from when I started first and pure weldmesh. Double spring both doors, to be sure to be sure, not like the springs cost the earth anyhow.

Watched a couple of greycrows arse around the edges but never had the patience to sit, wait and watch for a catch. Would end up shooting it instead :D

Just saw your photos now, looks like 1 inch x 1 inch stuff? I use 2 x 2, lets away smaller magpies if they're smart enough, but most usually aren't.

I have a mixture of traps from timber to weld mesh I do find that a spring from a tramploine will close the timber doors and hold them very tight;)

hi , just to add on the spring issue even tho they dont cost much i make mine by placing a six inch nail upright in a vice and winding steel rods around them . i get the steel from local concrete yard its used in concrete lentils , it can be cut to any length and they are strong

Oh dear, you have learned the hard way.

I bought my 8 foot x 4 foot sheets of 2x2 inch mesh for.... €22 each, the second time. The first time I think they were €18/€19.

Find a steel company and buy off them. Coen Steel in Oranmore is where I got mine.

Mate priced same sheets in a local-ish general merchants, I believe he said they were almost €50, and, well, I kinda didn't believe him at the time :o My bad.
