Just watched the first four eposides, and I dunno, just feels like its missing something, it doesnt quite have that kind of addictiveness about it that the other seasons had...

    Thoughts?

I hated the first episode with a vengeance, the interminable fairy malarkey at the start made me wonder if I was even watching the right programme

I think it has gotten better and better though, I am loving Amnesia Eric, and I think the witch storyline is excellent. There's loads more Pam, and I quite like new Evil Beel :D

The bits with the weretards were difficult to watch, just because I hate the Hotshot storyline sooo much (even in Season 3 I couldn't figure out WTF Jason found so amazing about Crystal). Jason seems back to his hilarious self now, phew!

Hate the storyline involving Arlene and the freaky baby and the freaky doll.

But each episode has improved on the previous one, so I'm sticking with it. Can't wait to see how things move on with the witches!

yes, I'm with you on Arlene - she's gone from a sweet but kooky nice person to someone who hates her baby - which I don't buy for one instant. And apart from the deeply unconvincing Marnie, and her reincarnated witch possessor, I'm not sure what they're kicking against, or how they're meant to be doing it.
Mind you - "the world needs more beekeepers" - they haven't lost their way with a classy one-liner.

It picks up starting at episode 4. I agree, the first 3 were pretty bleh.

I still can't decide whether I love or hate it. I loved the first 3 seasons, but something about this one, I love the Eric storyline, but the one about Arlene's baby is pointless.

I'm a bit disappointed with the Eric storyline, he's a bit too much of a wuss. I'm wondering is it gearing up for a total about turn so he's a complete a*hole to Sookie when he gets his memory back?

I'm liking it more than season 3 tbh, the storylines feel a lot more cohesive and the characters are interacting a bit more. And no more Sam's parents and Hotshot people (I hope) \o/

Really don't like Eric this season. He used to be so cool.

I would love to see him return to old eric but the show differs so much from the books that its too hard to tell

They are briefly in season 4. (I don't think it's too spoilerish to say that :D)

Don't expect this Eric to stick around tbh. They'll likely bring him back to his old self so that a) Eric will have to battle internally with who he wants to be; b) Sookie will have more to cry about and will have to decide if she really loves Eric enough to be with old Eric and; c) we can get the Sookie/Eric/Bill triangle back in action.

Is it a smart move? Probably not, but in honesty this show is driven by the love triangle stuff.

I'm loving this season actually. Marnie was an excellent addition; I think Fiona Shaw is doing wonderfully with that character. Tara isn't as annoying as she was before and the whole Lafayette being a witch thing has finally gained traction.

Bill is definitely better as evil King Bill than boring goody Bill. It's been cool seeing Eric in a whole new light. There's way more Pam (always a good thing) and a possible thing between Jessica and Jason has livened up both of those characters.

There are still some not-so-good bits (evil baby, boring werewolf stuff, Andy being a pain) but overall I definitely don't think this show has jumped the shark yet.

At this point I'm preferring S4 to either S2 or S3. Both of those two seasons spent way too much time meandering about on storylines that I (and many people) didn't care for ruining the momentum. There was so much dross in those 2 seasons if you cut it out you could have 1 excellent season between them. And wouldn't have infected the start of this series either.

Maryann and everything to do with her annoyed the shít out of me, especially anything to do with Tara. Tara took up too much time in S3 too. Everything to do with Hotshot was a waste of space. I like Sam but his dull history with Maryann which had been hinted at being a bit better than him stealing from her once and his biological family are ruining him. He'd be better if he was peripheral to main events than centre of his own tangents. Imo, Lorena and the Queen were too similar to be two characters in the series at once and could have been amalgamated.

A series with the Newlins, Godric and Russell as overlapping main stories, along with side-stories which were about characterisation rather than fantastical adventures could have made a very tight second season. Which could have lead brilliantly into the witch storyline this year.

I second this. Without Fiona Shaw, the Marnie character would be laughable and unbelievable. Fiona Shaw is an amazing actress and a real addition to the cast this year. It reminds me of the impact John Lithgow had in Dexter.

Fiona Shaw's acting is terrible in the scenes where she channels the Spanish Witch. It's like the Count from Sesame Street doing Scarface.

still not overly liking it, there seems to be too much going on:

    eric and his memory
    the witches
    the werepathers
    the werewolves
    the fairies
    the shifters
    the spirts and lafyette

and all the mini stories within....

its all a bit much for one small town! it just feels like its lost a bit of focus :(

and yes, I know they are all interlinked lol, but still!

When I realised there was only 3 episodes left I got a bit annoyed.

At the start I thought it was moving quickly but it seems to have slowed down since then.

I just get the sense that they dont really have a major plan as to where the story is leading in season 5 onwards. The plotlines dont intertwine very well, and a lot of it is really messy. Its disapointing really as Season 1 was really great.

Had this conversation with another TB fan on Saturday, I agree totally that Season 1 was amazing, but I feel it's been getting less compelling as the seasons go on.

Not quite as bad as later Buffy series yet, and I dearly hope they don't have some form of underground government funded military surprise in store for us in S5.....
