Buying car with tax disc 9 months out of date

Looking at buying an old peugeot 406.
The tax disc is 9 months out of date.
When I go to tax the car would I have to pay the back tax or do I wait until ownership has been transferred and then tax it from that date?
Can't ask Gardai to sign form saying car was not used for past 9 months as I believe it was occasionally.

This, you didn't own it until now so nothing to do with you whatsoever

I bought a car last year that was about two months out... From a dealer. I just went to guards explained my case briefly and if memory serves me correct they gave me a form for tax office. It seemed very routine. No questions asked. I'd be careful if it's a private sale though. Why not ring your local station and ask?

On the cartax form there is a part where if you just bought the car you fill in,including a trip to your local garda station who will fill in and stamp there part, then you go motor tax office .

As far as I know it can't just be taxed when you buy the car. The unpaid tax has to accounted for so either paid (do you really think the former owner will pay up at that stage!!) or be declared off the road.

what happens prior to purchase is irrelevant to the new owner, they cannot declare a car off the road when they did not own it. The car will be liable for tax from the month in which it was purchased. This means, for example, if you purchased a car today, 31st July, you would still be liable for Julys tax.

You're only liable for tax from after the date you become the owner.

Why on earth would you have to pay someone else's arrears?

It used to be the case.

OP, you are only liable for tax from the begining of the month in which you become the registered owner. Anything before that is not your concern.

Yep, once you have your log book back and go to tax it for the first time they would only take into account from 1st month of ownership. I like the Q4U places for the first time tax, change of address etc. as you can make sure of the dates you're being taxed for with the quys doing it for you.

Good to know. Why did the guy at the dealership send me to the cops to get the form stamped and why did the guard stamp it? Send the fool further gggrrrrrrrrr!!

ha, it's not the first time I heard of this happenin! I think some guards pay no attention to what they're stamping!

Thanks for all the posts guys.

    Seems simple enough.
Wonder if I would be OK to drive car while waiting for reg. to transfer over.

just go to the cop station and get it signed off...
I bought my car a few weeks ago and I got the tax signed off as it had been off the road for over 6 months.....they just signed it asap without any questions...

Whatever about the tax arrears I'd want a full service and inspection done on anything that's been sitting for 9 months.

I'm suprised how easy it is too declare cars "off the road", my timing belt snapped and my car was off the road for 7 months till it was repaired, I went in to ask the guard can i declare my car off the road from January too July, Guard said fine, didnt even ask why!

Signed and stamped in about 15 seconds.

I think that you will find that the Guard is only witnessing your declaration. If a declaration is made incorrectly (if it is found that the car was used on the road when it was declared to be off the road) there will be serious repercussions as the declaration has been made in front of a Guard

Sorry for bumping an old thread (I'd previously commented before)
I'm in the process of buying a second had car and did the online HPI and history, and where everything inc. NCT (June) etc. seems legit it hasn't been taxed Since 2009! (there was a gap where it wasn't NCT'd from June 09 til June 2012 also) - once I'm the new owner, would there be any repercussions from the tax being so far out or would it still be like the previous comments that once I have the log book it'll just be taxed from purchase date?

The new owner is only liable for tax from the month it was bought.

The tax or lack thereof before you bought the car is of no consequence to you.
