Problem with molar after wisdom teeth op

    Hi all,

I had all 4 wisdom teeth out last Wednesday. Procedure went well. I was sedated and don't remember a thing!

Since Friday I've had issues with one of my bottom molars. Not the one right beside the extraction, but the one next to it (apologies but I don't know the tooth numbers). I had a crown put on this tooth about six months ago due to a large filling that was needed.

The tooth is very sensitive and any attempts to put pressure on it through eating causes quite a bit of pain. Even a gentle touch with the top molar causes sensitivity. It's also ultra sensitive to hot and cold and will cause discomfort if I have anything other than lukewarm liquid.

I just want to check if this is normal before I phone my dentist in the morning. The gum around it is still very sore, so I'm putting it down to that.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Hi I just had all 4 wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday through sedation as well.
I've only just started eating harder food as my mouth is going back to normal.
I'm experiencing a similar thing with my bottom left molar when I put any pressure on it it feels very sensitive and sore (hot and cold food are also a bother).

My molar is right next to the extraction site though and doesn't have any fillings, but like you even when I put pressure on it with my upper teeth it hurts. The pain then runs along through the teeth next to it.

I can't ask my surgeon about it 'till tomorrow but seeing as I'm not the only one experiencing this it seems like it could be normal (I hope).

I must add that you can see right into the extraction site so maybe it's exposed to food etc which is causing sensitivity along that row of teeth.
Obviously a professional in this area will be able to tell you what's going on, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing a similar problem.

    Hi guys,

    The pain you are feeling could be a few things;
    • Regular post-operative pain that will settle with time & managed by pain killers for now
    • Infection, characterized by increased swelling and tenderness, sometimes pus, bad taste and mouth oder, sometimes feeling very unwell
    • Dry socket, characterized by severe pain, an empty socket with food impaction and stagnation, bad smell and taste
    • The roots of adjacent teeth may have become temporarily exposed as the surgeon has to strip the gum back and then stitch it back in place after the tooth is out. Because of this, the exposed root of the other teeth can become sensitive. This settles as the gum reattaches and roots become less sensitive with time anyway, use sensodyne or your dentist may paint a fluoride varnish on for now.
    • A coincidental pain that is nothing to do with the wisdom tooth but is just happening now...
Secondspring, sounds like sensitivity to me

    Saaron, may be dry socket

BUT, PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR DENTIST/SURGEON

    All the best,
    OS

    Thanks guys,

Things have improved a bit since writing the post and my dentist is putting it down to the gum around the tooth being swollen. Hopefully a few more days and things will be back to normal.
