Ah it has to be the bonobo such a graceful intelligent species. Seeing them walk upright is a reminder of how close they are to us. The only place I saw them in a zoo would be the san diego zoo in america but there are plans to place them in breeding programs in europe.

African wild dogs! They're the reason I decided to be a zoologist.... Back when I was only ten years old :')

Gorillas ! They are absolutely terrifying at times, but last time I saw them I remember thinking how their behaviour is so human-like

Wouldn't fancy a fight to the death against one of them... there'll only be one winner.

Is this the "long awaited proof" of evolution. :)

The only "zoo" I have visited in years (I'd rather not mention my visit to Dublin zoo about 30 years ago - shudder-) was Fota, and I loved the Lemurs, something to with the fact they were roaming free around the train station, I felt as if I was in Madagascar.

No I haven't seen Scooby and the gang in........well.. lets just say a while ;)
I do think I might have spotted one of those jackelopes while picking a certain type of fungi in my wilder, younger days though. :)

Well you very possibly could have seen a jackalope guys as the jackalope myth sprang up after people sighted rabbits infected with the very real Sope papilloma virus which causes keratin based growths to appear on the rabbit like the picture below.

These growths can also be seen on the head of the rabbit so you can see how the myth sprang up!

These animals are under threat unfortunately but they are amazing animals. There is an excellent conservation project going on at the moment dedicated to keeping these animals in existence.

Heres their website http://www.save-the-african-wild-dog.com/. You could contact them for information, who knows you may even get the chance to do some volunteer work with them if you enquire.

When I was a kid I always loved the gibbons in Dublin Zoo

    gibbon.jpg

A few years ago I was in a primate sanctuary in South Africa called Monkeyland (well worth a visit if you ever find yourself near there) where they have guided groups walking through the forest where various monkeys reside. For the first half of the tour our group was followed closely by a very inquisitive gibbon. It was really cool getting to see one that close.

I will definatly go if I ever find myself in south africa thanks for the link. I liked the gibbons because they were usually the first thing I heard when coming into dublin zoo. Their also the fasted non flying tree dwelling animal and have been known to reach speeds slightly above thirty five miles an hour.

My fave animals to watch in the zoo are these:

    SandbarShark030.jpg

Seriously, I can spend hours and hours just standing in front of the shark tank, watching them move. They are amazingly beautiful animals, so elegant, so silent, so perfect. I actually wanted to get a job as a shark keeper but... I'm kind of an artist so the thought of having my hand bitten off by a shark kinda put me off.

I also spend a lot of time watching this guy of course:
