Just moved into a new house and the last tenants had UPC so there is a small UPC box installed on the window sill. What if I don't want to get UPC or Sky and just want a few channels? Can I connect my tv to this box with some sort of cable and just get RTE and those?

If it's still connected to the UPC network, which I assume it is, you should be able to connect a coax cable straight from it to your TV and pick up the basic (17 for Dublin, god knows how many in Sligo) channels.
Whether you should be notifying UPC that you're doing this or not is another issue that I'll leave you to decide on.

I moved into a new house two weeks go and had the same situation, when the UPC guy arrived to set up my internet connection he connected the tv to the connection that was already there for me for free, I was using rabbit ears all along for the four basic channels so my reception is far better now, I rang UPC and from what I gathered it will still work when the country switches to saorview, result.

by connecting the cable you are getting UPC, so it sounds like you do want UPC.
