Do you have to study a language in 1st year European Studies?

Or can you simply do European Studies in your first year without doing a language? I'm heading into Arts at UCC as a mature student in Sept. and trying to figure out what courses to choose. I'm thinking Politics, Religions & Global Diversity and then have to come up with two "filler" subjects so I'm thinking European Studies (as long as you don't have to do a language!) and maybe History or Philosophy or even Celtic Civilisations.

From the UCC site it says: "European Studies - First Year students wishing to take the European Studies Pathway in Second Year must choose European Studies, one or two languages (French, German, Spanish, Italian)" Does that mean you don't need to take a language in year one? Thanks.
