Hello I am trying to use an old netgear router as a switch, to connect two pcs to the net via ethernet cables. I can do this by simply plugging in cables to the second router and the pcs work fine.

However this stops laptops connecting wirelessly to the internet, come form of ip conflict or both routers trying to assign IPs. So i think I need to get into my second routers settings and disable dchp and maybe some other things.

Now while this router used to broadcast as 'UPC170' a few months ago until we got a new router from ntl, and I always used to connect to it via wireless, it does not seem to broadcast that now.

I could not connect to it via wireless as I could not see any ssid so I tried a cat5. This also does not work as a yellow warning sign comes up beside the connection and I can not ping 192.168.1.1. After a few resets UPC170 appeared for a minute, but disappeared when i tried to go to 192.168.1.1. I manually changed my ip to 192.168.1.10 and i could then ping the router, but I still can not bring it up in a browser?! any suggestions?

Not all routers use the same IP address.

for instance my Eircom netopia IP is 192.168.1.254. - It maybe that if you google the name of your router and a query about IP it could give you more information.

It might also give you more specific information about your specific problem as well if you phrased your query correctly.

Hello, I know it is the correct IP as I have used the router many times before, plus I can ping it, and checked via console.
What do you mean phrase the query correctly? It's outlined as the router not broadcasting it's SSID, whereas it did the last time I used it, and also not letting anybody access it's administration panel, either wired or wirelessly? And what setting could be causing this?

when i change ip to 192.168.1.10 I can see i am recieving and sending information to the router, i just cant get to the admin panel, resetting the router has done nothing. if i leave my ip as automatic i get an error saying that the local area connection does not have it's ip configured correctly. ???

tried the reset button adn to put on firmware via tftp but i keep getting timeout errors now, with 192.168.1.1 only pinging back every now and again :S

You are meant to do this when powering on, however if i wait a few minutes and apply the firmware then it says successful, the light blinks faster and then stabilizes. I reset and the light starts flashing again, indicating a bricked router. perhaps it isnt successful really because i wait too long?

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. I meant to say that the problem could be that both routers are giving out dhcp settings. Maybe disconnect the old router. Connect the new one only and then try accessing this one either wirelessly or otherwise, disabling the dhcp and then connect the old router that still has the dhcp, It will possibly give the new router an IP address if not it may be that the IP on the new router can be set. If not then there could be some setting on the router that it can be used as a repeater, check for information about settings for client mode or look up google on how to set it up as a local device or bridge.
