was asked to turn off at a recent gig, some of the images after were a bit soft - does turning off illuminator/light take away from auto focus mechanics ? - and i guess it is standard now for many venues to ask snappers to turn off ??

I guess you were using a Nikon? My friends Nikon has a white light that turns on when its focusing - and its really annoying. Venues will ask you to turn it off, and some will kick you out for using a flash. At the end of the day, the gig is for the patrons enjoyment and many people find camera flashes and lights distracting and annoying.

I'm not sure what function that light serves, but from the sounds of it, it does indeed help the camera focus. I would have assumed that would be infra-red, but in this case I guess not. What model is it? I haven't seen those lights on higher end models...

I use a Nikon D200 and it has the white focus light, in dark situations it helps the camera to focus on the subject before taking the photograph, if it is turned off then the camera wont focus properly, leading to soft shots.

I think most of the strobes have some facility to turn off the strobe and just use the IR focus aid most of them seem to have. Or there's a nikon extension cord that has an IR focus aid emitter IIRC. Might be worth your while looking into the alternatives if you're doing a lot of gig and lowlight work and AF'ing it.
