There is no point in using a car to go to Venice or Rome as a car is entirely useless in these places and you have to pay to park it. Drive around small places in Tuscany or Umbria, and fly or take the train to the cities.

It is always worth checking the click through on the Aer Lingus and Ryanair websites, otherwise holidayautos.ie autoeurope.ie are good and clear on what you get. The latter also sell extra insurance to cover the excess on the car hire insurance or you can get an annual excess policy from Axa.

I did that exact trip in 08. Went with sixt. You can get upgraded insurance which means even if you wreck the car you won't pay extra.
Theres also an in between level which doesn't cover roof and undercarriage damage.

I'll check my old mails. We went around lake garda area and even went to the swiss border just because :-)

Thought having the car was well worth it but as previously stated by ardmacha the car is useless in Venice, we started out there and collected the car when we were leaving the city. Sixt have a depot at the train station.

If you're going to Florence, you won't be able to drive in the centre. And parking is dear. Luckily our hotel had parking included.

I loved driving in Rome I must say.

I always like having the car nearby, if only for somewhere to leave your stuff.

Check out the website and get a quote there. It'll give you the price.

    you've basically two options:

go for a professional and recognised company like Hertz, get no hassle, pay slightly more, but no need for extra insurance etc. Get a slightly better deal if book through Ryanair / AL when sorting flights out too.

go for one of the local companies via the likes of carhire3000.ie and pay less but also basically have to take out the extra insurance as they will find a mark on it.

I used to go witht he cheaper ones but got sick of the hassle. It's so much easier to pay more to Hertz for no hassle. Price equals out in the end with the extra insurance.

Petrol is about 1.58- 1.62 over there as of two weeks ago. a quick search show 282 quid for hertz for a week in Oct for a Focus, not bad.

Edit: you can drive in the centre of Florence, but the traffic is insane and there are a lot of pedestrianised areas

I booked a car (fiat bravo or simila sized car) on carhire3000.com for two weeks at 402E - picking it up at Milan airport later next month.
You can get excess cover from carhireexcess.ie for about 3E per day.

As others have said, some cities in Italy are a nightmare from either a parking or traffic perspective. Be especially cautious in Florence and Pisa, as its very easy to get a fine from the automated ZTL system (takes a photo of your car, and sends you a fine if you enter historic streets without a valid residential pass).
