318Ci Diagnostic Testing

    Hi guys,

The dreaded engine light came on this evening on my 2003 E46 318Ci :(

I recently got an oil service, and and a general look over of the car ( brake pad sensors also replaced).

I had driven for the last 2 weeks with no problems and this evening when driving on the motorway the engine light came on...I wasn't driving it hard, and the only thing I did just before was to turn on the cool air circulator.

After forking out a few hundred quid two weeks ago, I don't really want to spend alot more taking it to the stealership to find out it may be nothing.

Is there any way to perform your own diagnostics ( like on the older cars ) or have any of ye guys ever bought your own diagnostic tool?

Any help or advice appreciated :)

    niallu

Or has anyone tried the eBay versions.... I tried searching for e46 diagnostics and can automatically rule a few of the eBay results out as they are the generic obdii readers while the BMW one has more options!
