Very true but can they can they not electrify a normal car that actually looks OK. Look at the Octy for example, all the space for those laptop batteries in the boot....:pac:

There is the need for as close to zero drag as poss to get the most from the batteries I suppose. Halfway 'chargehouses' might be a new feature on the landscape like the coach-house of old where the horses needed to be changed or overnighted. Can't see how any of these electric cars would bring a family from dub to kerry with luggage.

Fast chargers will charge a car in 30 minutes.

So one 30 minute stop between Dublin and Kerry wouldn't be unrealisable.

Typical motors response: I'll never drive that. Its not a BMW unless it has a straight 6 2.8 litre petrol. rabble rabble rabble

The more electric cars manufactures make the more the inclined the esb will be to roll out these rapid charging points. Its ultimately the future and we have to embrace it a some stage :)

until electric cars get as much miles as normal gasoline engines they are going to be a pipe dream.

i work in battery stuffs and thats basically electric cars summed into a few words..

the battery pack for the tesla sports car is a monster and has huge capacity. if it was installed in a tinny car like a nissaan leaf it would run for hundreds of miles but its not financially viable.

batterys are big things now tho...!

The power to drive the electric motor is provided by a set of lithium-ion batteries with a liquid-cooling system that are mounted within the central section of the floor. They can be fully recharged in six hours using a standard power socket. If a high-speed charger is used, an 80 per cent charge can be achieved in one hour. The batteries offer a driving range of around 120km to 160km (80-100 miles).

BMW will also offer an optional Range Extender called the REx, which allows the electric driving range to be increased. The REx comprises of a small displacement petrol engine that drives a generator which maintains the battery charge level and therefore extends the range of the electric motor. BMW says that to reduce fuel consumption, REx also features such functions as Automatic Start-Stop and other intelligent operating strategies.

100 miles driving range or whatever is useless.

I wouldnt buy one.. fast charges would yield even less than 100 miles..

its going to be quite a long time until electric cars really become useful and drivers dont have to stock underwear in the glove box from crapping themselves looking for charging outlets in the middle of nowhere..,.

No not like a Prius. It's petrol engine drives the wheels, whereas in this it is solely for charging the battery.

The vast majority of journeys are under a 100 miles, most people would have no difficulty in using one of these on a daily basis.

The only problem is they are too dear and battery replacement costs make them expensive to run.

But break through's will come, electric is most likely the future.

How do you know the majority of the irish car population want.... as you say 'normal looking cars'?

Where are you getting these facts from? Have you done a survey or something?

Your attitude is so typically irish.... the rejection of anything new, futuristic and exciting..... the fear of looking odd! Are we supposed to drive around today's car 'designs' for the next 50 years or what?

Makes me wonder how we managed to get beyond driving the Model T sometimes in this country.......and this is why nothing of note ever gets designed in Ireland because it's boring, retarded and out of date.:)

As for the photos of cars Zod uploaded...yeah ...boxes! Give me the BMW!

    Regards.

No typical Irish motorist response is " I'll never drive that, its not a BMW unless its got a noisy bone shaker of a 4 pot desiel engine, sure its 158 euro a year in tax which off sets the 10k extra I paid for it no problem." or a real BMW fanboy (like me) would ask if a 2.8litre straight is really big enough.

Yup, not like a prius at all. Pope announces that he's going for a dump in the woods, and that all bears are Catholic. :D:p:D (I think the small engine might be a rotary actually, that's what Audi were using for range extender?).

BMW had electric MINI's on trial for a good while. Pity they didn't go with them - that i3 is gammy looking*. If they had scaled up the MINI Rocketman "urban mobility" concept it would have been cool.

*Is it just me or are BMW grilles getting more gammy by the day? Squinty new 1 series, and then this i3 thing?

100 mile range will last the average irish person 3 and a half days.

Is that because the average person takes the bus or train to work? ;)

People who train/bus it into work usually live in suburban areas and would be the well suited to EVs. ;)
