Need some help choosing a diesel car :)

    Hi all,

I'm looking to get a diesel car with a budget of €4000 (stretching to €4200) with <110,000 miles and a decent NCT.
I have been driving petrols cars since day one so I know relatively little when it comes to diesels.

Everyone is telling me to stick to Mondeos, Octavias or Passats for a reliable diesel but I would also like to know the reliability of other diesels within that price range such as an Opel Vectra or a Mazda 6. Some Boards searches have brought up some mixed results.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Mazda 6 would be off the list anyway if its diesel. Vectra diesel is ok or Passat either.

Honda Accord would be out of your budget I think.

A rover 75 or mg zt diesel with the autobox is worth a shot

I'd suggest you educate yourself about the problems associated with dual mass fly wheels and diesel particulate filters before you go any further.

Have a read of the reviews in the second hand section of honestjohn.co.uk for the various models you are considering, it can be an eye opener!

    Thanks folks :)

I'm liking the look of the Vectras both inside and out. If they are reliable then I would be very swayed.

Also, what about diesel Renaults and Primeras?

    I wouldnt touch a pre 06 Laguna.

The diesel primera is 2.2 and Renault. Which kills it somewhat

S40 with the old Renault diesel engine?

Has anyone much experience with Vectras?

A Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi would a good bet. Could prove difficult to find a tidy one though as the newest models are now 7 or 8 years old. I don't understand the disgarding anything with more than 110k miles either. Diesels are designed to be driven and on a budget of 4k your going to be looking at driven ones. I'd be more suspect of a low mileage diesel car to be honest.

For your budget you may be buying an older car and for a near certainty it will have high mileage. Vectras are oil burners

I have to say I'm currently driving a 98 diesel mondeo with about 80k on the clock. Its a fantastic car, good mileage out of the diesel. The only thing I'd it has been in the family since new and has been taken care of regarding servicing etc. You would want a detailed history before bringing a car as old as it!

I'd say the only diesel Vectras you will be looking at for €4k will be the ones with the dreadful GM 2.0 litre unit.

It's impossible to know what kind of car to recommend when we don't know what you're looking for your car to do!

Some great replies - thanks all!

I want my car to... Drive 15mls annually with 10 of hose motorway miles, be reasonably economic, decent looks inside and out and be reliable. That's all :D

    Is performance important?

    Is performance important?

I'd like something with a bit of power so anything under 2litre and 130BHP, I'd imagine.
