Was the British Open by D. Clarke a fluke ? Weather, draw, two bogey finish. I won 800 quid, but thinking back and looking at him play last two days. But, I think he was sick last two days , but time will tell.

He beat the entire field over 4 rounds.

Don't see how it could be a fluke. Beating someone over one hole could be a fluke but not over 72 holes and 280 odd strokes of the ball.

If you drank as much Guinness as him in recent time you wouldn't be able to see the ball never mind hit it ;)

No not a fluke but more like an ageing boxer. The speed is gone but the strength remains. When times were testing he mustered up the power and had the mentality to overcome the conditions. I'm not sure if he could do it again but that was one savage KO to the game of golf.

You get my thinking, he was a nobody winner of a major, a Ben Curtis, everything came together to help him, poor field form , weather, no Tiger, the draw.

We as Irish tend to latch onto sporting success , everybody going on about our major winners, the form the rish/n. Irish lads have shown lately is poor and our record in majors historically is shocking.

Anyway, he should have won 5 majors ten years ago.

He's a former World Golf Champion, having beaten TW in the final. Hardly a "nobody", ffs.

    You don't know your golf,

As I said , I bet 5euro e/w, it was a guess place, but a fluke to win, I put my hands up.

No No .. Now that not exactly what I meant .. Nothing came together to help him, he helped himself. Maybe a little luck on course but he took it down all by himself using his unique skill set. Good balls striking and low boring ball flight , intelligence to play his way around a tough links course and experience to handle the pressure.

Darren Clarke is far from a nobody. probably one of the best golfers ever not to win a major before The Open. Maybe his career record is not that amazing but his talent is obvious for anyone with eyes to see ..

I mean a nobody the week of the open, 5 years prior. Anyway, don't think I'd get many to agree, but the weather won it for him and he even got the good weather. I'll enjoy the win, but I know it was a fluke and will not bet him ever again.

He has won 1 major, 2 WGCs, 22 pro events and is 6th on the all time money list on the European Tour. Of course he is a nobody

Ah yeah Opics but all that will mean fcuk all to Dazzler now that FixdePitchmark has deserted him, a career low for the man.

    Is Rory Irish or British?
Will Rory reach Tigers or Jacks records?

Give the money to charity if you think Clarke, and thus you, didn't deserve to win

    LOL.

Anway, we will sit and watch how he gets on, apologies on a post please.

What is the cut in the Irish Open again. --- sorry I think he was genuinely sick today, not just the drink, I do admire his win and Oh boy did I enjoy the win and clubs I got out of it, but, I know what it is and where it stands on the golf records.

Won't get into that, do charity at source,

Too early to tell on Rory, swing needs to slow down a bit, will get too many injuries, like tiger. Youth on his side now, but change to swing speed required by thirty.

Darren played better than anyone else. He also has form and isn't an unknown who came from nowhere. Fluke my aunt fanny.

I don't think it was a fluke. I certainly think it was unexpected. He had shown slightly better form of late including a win.
As for the draw, well he did get the best of it on that front but there were far better ( higher ranked ) players around his tee times who never figured also.
Links golf is a great leveler and of course you get bad breaks and good ones. Durind the last round i recall D C's ball hopping over bunkers twice.
I firmly believe he was the best golfer over the 4 rounds. TBH he missed a load of short putts and should have won by more.

He's back to his usual s***e this week.;)

I think we should shuttle you down to Killarney at once to advise Rory on his swing speed.

Because you clearly know your stuff.

Exactly. Each game of golf takes a life of its own. There is so many good players vying to win a major that's its bound to have a sort of cyclical element to it.
Winning the open was certainly no fluke. Conditions were extremely rough and its 4 days long with a total of 72 holes, yet Clarke was up there all the way to the end. Im delighted for him.

thanks, yes the equation is k.e. =1/2mv2. Basic science. All that energy is held in shaft, knee, wrist. The problem is the little sq. At the end of that eqn. You paying for that trip. Will save him pain and maths.

grrrrr fluke my backside. clarke is a former world golf champion, he beat tiger woods. he has the game, he's just been out of sorts. thank god he's found it again. seriously this week was his first time playing golf since his win.

i will say his shot on 9 at the open on the final day from the rough was a lucky shot. think some one from the heavens helped there.

I am going to stick my neck out here - having read this thread I actually think that the OP started it in an attempt to provoke interesting debate. I could be wrong but that is my feeling. I also actually agree with him on his point about McIlroy's swing - I feel that he could well become injury prone as he gets older unless he begins to tone it down a bit as time goes by.

But on topic so to speak - Clarke had shown previous form. When he was playing well in years gone by he was probably the best at delivering the club face square to the ball - always a good place to start.

You got me, no harm in a bit of provocation now and again, I just think it is the end of Clarke, was an amazing experience and I've watched Clarke for years, when he is hot he is hot, reminds me of Ronnie O'Sullivan. But the game has moved on.

Hope I'm wrong , but it was one perfect moment in time, the Gods looked down on him, he deserved it, but sport is an amazing thing. To think Monty never won a Major.

On other topic, injury managment and core fitness is going to be a new aspect of the game, I was shocked recently to read that Luke Donald only started going to the Gym this year, so still big movment in that direction to come.

As for Jimenez, they are great characters the two of them, and as Daren said the fans love to think they are like the lads having a pint and that.

Anyway, we have come to an end to this , back out to hit my New (D Clarke win) JPX 800 irons and will dream the dream of sub 80 once again. Clarke keeps the dream alive for the dreamers , I'm not over forty yet. lol. Anyone for a pint.
