Perfect jab

When teaching boxing skills to beginners I have often described the jab as being the "bread & butter" of good technique as it is important in both offence and defence.

Who do you guys think has used their jab most effectively in boxing both past and present??

Frank Bruno had a great jab, Tommy Hearns did too.
The Klitscko's can win fights by jab alone, thats impressive.

There is plenty more but off top of my head they stand out

To answer most effectively in it's most literal sense you couldn't look past the Klitchkos. It would be interesting to see the punchstats from a fight where he threw his highest % of left jabs, bound to be something like 75% of his punches.
Amir Khan has a nice jab, he is accurate and fast with it, he can pop the head back.
Floyd Mayweather does an uncommon punch, a fully committed jab to the body with his weight behind it after a big step in. It stops opponents coming forward and racks up points. It's an eye catching punch.
Has anyone ever been knocked out by a jab? I'd assume the opponent would have to be charging forward at speed and catch it flush.

A good jab would easily KO someone
Im pretty sure there has been many many KO from jabs

I had looked it up once before to check it on youtube something like "jab ko" and I got some Tommy Morrison jab that didn't quite seem a jab.
I know there is the guy who ran straight into Valuev which was quite funny, but I'm not sure if Valuev had even got a punch off. As I remember he just brought his hands up and the guy ran into an immovable object.
Have the left jab Klitchkos got a ko yet from one?

Tommy's was a Jab, what else could it be?

I would be guessing if Klitchskos ever KO'd anyone with a jab but would not be suprised if either did.

I'd have to check the video again. But as I remember at the time thinking he got some bit of left hook/left overhand into it. It wasn't a straight out from the shoulder jab with his left foot planted on the floor. But I'd have to check again.

You can check all day bud, it was a jab and foot been on the ground or not is irrelevant to a jab, it was certainly not a hook or overhand or even in between, id say it was a very good jab

The perfect jab would have Ali's speed and variation combined with Liston's potency.

My man, JT, had a very heavy jab.

    Pea Whitaker's jab was superb.

Watched it again, that is a jab alright. I think the knockout came as he bent down his left knee as well to get extra power. Really got everything in behind it.

Big Daddy Bowe won the heavyweight title with his jab, amongst other things.

Some big names mentioned there. Miguel Cotto has also had some success with his jab, and I suppose Andy Lee has stood behind his jab a fair bit too.

Aside from the boxers already mentioned -
Lennox Lewis had a brilliant Jab, maybe not hugely powerful but incredibly effective for keeping the opponent very uncomfortable
Virgil Hill, Ike Quartey, Ricardo Lopez, ODLH, all great jabbers, varying degrees of power but all very useful.

A skillful boxer always has a good jab. In amateur boxing it wins you fights, in pro boxing it greatly helps you to win fights.

    Sonny Liston

Sonny Liston's left arm was noticeably more muscular than his right, which gave rise to the idea he was southpaw turned orthodox. Well more like taught in the orthodox stance in prison but his left hand was his more powerful. 6 feet and half an inch tall but an 84" inch reach! He knocked many a guy out with the jab, it was his main weapon. Many have said he has the greatest jab of all time. It is at least top 3 of all time IMO.

Watch the first Ali Liston fight thought and Liston can't touch Ali. You would expect a great jabber to be able to land his jab. I know that boiled down to Ali's quicker feet movement, but speed and accuracy are the key components of the jab.

    Larry Holmes
    Muhammad Ali
    Pernall Whitaker
    Tommy Hearns
Roy Jones Jr had a nice snappy jab
    Sonny Liston
    Junior Jones
    Willie Pep

Just off the top of my head.

Funny you mention him; because to me that was a weakness in Roy. Lack of a jab, or at least a consistent jab.

RJJ is like FMJ; they both had a pretty good jab but never used it.

One of my favourite moments from a fight is in the Mayweather Hatton fight when in one of the later rounds Mayweather suddenly decides to use his jab, and lands it almost at will on Ricky. Great stuff!

He didn't use it enough that was the problem for me, but I suppose in a way he didn't need it.

Floyd has the best Jab in boxing today.

This is not true. I know you are a big Floyd fan and it has coloured your judgement here. His jab isn't in the top 5 IMO.

I don't believe anyone has mentioned the Real Deal Holyfield?

He had a very powerful and fast jab. It was very evident in the Bowe fight, Foreman fight and Douglas fight. All fights against bigger men, and men with very good jabs.

Good post. Holyfield's double jab was a thing of beauty.

Yes, that double jab really was beautiful, and so heavy too.
