Acer Laptop overheating

Anyone ever had any issues with Acer laptops overheating?

My Aspire 5536 has started shutting down randomly. I get a quick message flash on screen saying it's due to critical core temperature.

The random shut downs appeared to corrupt my Windows install. I managed to reformat and install Ubuntu once it had cooled down and it seems to be running ok now - no hardware damage that I can see.

I plan on reinstalling Win 7 but just wondering if anyone has any advice for preventing the overheating? I don't do anything too processor or graphics intensive but the laptop did get noticeably hot to touch when running for a few hours. It appears to be getting particularly hot in the top left hand part of the keyboard, where the power jack is.

    Ever dust it out?

Yeah, had planned on doing that over the weekend. Going to pick up some thermal paste too and re-apply.

Any other suggestions to keep it running cool? Would you recommend a laptop cooling pad - or are they just a waste of money?

Give it a good cleaning out of dust and make sure to give the fan a thorough cleaning, even so far as using some ear buds to swipe the fan blades free of dust and definately you could use 2 of these below and put 1 each at the back under the rubber feet to prop up the rear a half inch or so for better ventilation and save on the price of a cooling fan :D

    Clean the fans
    Reapply thermal paste
    fresh install of os
undervolt the cpu (plenty of guides online)

Pretty much sums up what to do.
