Boiler & Gas bill query

We switched off our gas boiler there about 4 months ago and i was surprised to receive a gas bill for 79 euro two months ago. This was estimated so i figured the next bill would be in credit but we've just received another bill for 39 euro. Given that our gas boiler is powered off, does anyone have any idea how it could still be using gas?

(I'm in an apartment and for the summer we're using the immersion heater as our gas boiler can only heat water AND radiators, rather than just water)

Yeah I think there is a fixed price you pay even if you don't use your boiler, and are you really sure neither of you has used it even a little ittle bit, maybe your gf/room mate might want to make a confession. But in saying that there is a standard charge whether it is used or not.

If you don't want to be charged anything you should ring them and close your account. :D

Almost 100% sure. The power to the boiler is off and the water pressure is about 0.2 bar, there is a slow leak in the system somewhere and we're having to top it off every couple of months so even if it was on it wouldn't work (generally we have to get a heating specialist in at start of winter to get it going again, long story!

It's not that I don't to use it, it's more so impractical to heat the apartment in the summer months so we can have hot water so the immersion is more useful. I wouldn't have expected a standard charge to be so high really.

The standing charge with Bord Gais should only be about a tenner for two months (ex. VAT). It's detailed on the bill though, so you should be able to see exactly how many units you are using. Is the pilot light off?

If you ask them to disconnect you they will charge a disconnection fee. Then they will charge a reconnection fee when you want it back on.
Why not turn all your radiators off and use it to heat the water, it would be cheaper than the immersion.

Just moved into a new house.

Brand new boiler with 2 channel controls etc and an new looking electronic gas meter outside. Not used to this setup so decided to test out usage.put the boiler on for an hour to heat the water only, stat set at 60 c. meter went from 62528 before I put it on to 63080 after!

That can't be right,I'd be bankrupt trying to keep the kids clean at that rate

The meter is measuring m3 your billed in kwh.

Sometimes it can be cheaper to constantly heat the water as your just maintaining a temp as oppose to heating from cold.

looked at a recent bill which had the units multiplied by the conversion rate which was 11.5. so I used 2m3 last time out in old house.no need for gas this time of year. anyway the 2*11.5=23kwh at.0315 cent=72 cent

working off that Ive just used 552*11.5=6348Kwh*.0315=199 quid:eek:

What am I missing here cos that cant be right
