    Just looking for a bit of advice from someone in the know.
    My brother graduated from college in June.
    In mid July, he was offered two jobs, one with company A and one with company B.

    Both were differing positions, and the one with company A, though it had less salary, seemed to suit him better, so he took it.
    Contracts signed, and he began last week, but no P45 into them yet.

    So, he now decides that he doesn't really like the job, and it's not affording him any opportunities to do what he would like to be doing, whereas Company B seems to be flourishing and is really the area he wants.

    He got in touch with Company B at the end of last week, and they mentioned that the position was still available, so he's caught in no man's land really.
    What would the legalities be around leaving his current position to move here?
    Is it allowed, and would there be a notice period, or could he just up and leave and begin the new job?

    It's a big move, so he wants to be sure that Company A can't stop him leaving or anything? I know little about these matters, but I've read his contract and it mentions that

    "During your probationary period, your employment may be terminated at any
    time by the Company or by you on giving the other party two weeks notice."

    but also that

    "Both parties may waive their right to notice."

    Any HR peeps out there that could give advice please?

    Well tell him to go look at his contract!!!!

    It will have a section on leaving and notice periods - usually it's a straight up 1 weeks notice if that for the amount of time he's been there, though depending on the job and position it could get very tricky - So check his contract to see if there are any terms to him leaving like paying for training cost or not being allowed to work in a similar role for a certain amount of time.

    He has figured all this out in a week! In general terms I'd say it usually takes at leas 12 months before a graduate is in a position to make any real contribution in the work place and during that time they will mostly be doing routine tasks, so he should not be expecting to set the world on fire just yet! And my guess is that if he joins the other company he will find the same thing.

    Assume he will have to work the notice period, there is no way anyone here can second guess what his employer will agree to.
