    buy a MAC ;)

if you go for a PC, go for as powerfull as your budget can stretch - Core i7, 8 gig of ram, 64bit OS...

CPU and RAM are the biggest factors with audio software. Any of the latest CPUs like Intel 2500k would be ideal. Plenty of RAM (>4 gbs) is needed as well.

If you use a lot of samples then a fast hard drive would be nice. If you had a lot of cash, a nice SSD hard drive would make things lightening fast but will cost you. You could look into getting a RAID setup as well but could be overkill.

I can wholeheartedly recommend an SSD. From cold boot, you can hit the Windows 7 log in screen in about 10 seconds. Applications and plugins load pretty much instantly. The SSD is completely silent in operation so no grinding noise when theres disk activity.

You don't need a huge SSD either. A clean Windows install is what? 15 to 20 gigs with pagefile.sys and no hyberfil.sys (i.e. pagefile on the ssd, hibernation disabled)?

So a 60gb to 90gb SSD is fine. I put a Windows 7 install on mine and all the applications I want to load really fast + all my VST plugins.

Then I have a 2gb hard disk with only static media (music, video, sample libraries, impulse responses etc). I just symlink it the stuff I want to appear on the c:\ drive so it works just like libraries.

There is a good thread on building your own pc here

+1 on an SSD for the OS, especially if you are going to be using mics close to your pc and need silence, but maybe wait a while until they come down a bit in price
