The Mrs. 06 s-max has just developed a bit of vibration in the steering wheel on braking, I'm assuming its front disc trouble - am I correct? If so, how difficult are they to replace? its due timing belt soon which will be done with a full service at the dealers (theyre giving a price of 450 all in, which is ok) but i'd let them diagnose the problem but fit meself or elsewhere if its not too complex. I have basic tools and even more basic skills, I'd be handy but havent done much mechanicing

I dont think you would get a vibration up through the steering wheel from the disks. usually warped disks will cause vibration up the brake pedal. Them disks seem to be pretty good even the Garda ones never suffer from this(it is possible but I've never seen it happen).
Get them to check the wheels for play, it could be worn bushes, track rod ends, inner tie rods etc. Also the wheel could be buckled or out of balance.

As for the timing belt is yours a 1.8 diesel? There is a major problem with Ford on these. i'll tell you if its the 1.8tdci other engines are ok.

Thanks for your reply. Its a 2.0 diesel, the vibration is only seems apparent in the wheel when braking although i dont drive it all the time, I should give it a spin again - bushes, track rod ends, I'd expect to feel or hear something when turning hard etc. Actually, tyres are due to replace soon so the tyre centre might diagnose.
