GAA - for the love of their county? Really?

I was never a GAA fan and to be honest I am completely clueless about it.

From my perception of the sport, I have questions that often don't get a reasonable response:
    • If its an amateur sport why the ticket prices so high?
    • If its an amateur sport why are the shirts so expensive?
    • I find the comment, "they play for the love of their county" and not for money like them <insert insult about English soccer players> a bit hard to swallow.
    • I find it hard to believe they don't get paid or at least 'looked after'.

It seems somebody somewhere is getting very fat out of the whole thing and the players who are professional in every respect get nothing but a round of applause?

These are questions not statements. Forgive my ignorance and please enlighten me! :)

PS. I deliberately posted her as opposed to the GAA section to get an unbiased response!

They get looked after alright, between never having to buy a pint again the job offers would roll in.

it's a slogan about players really. the amount of time and effort they put into training for what may only be two games is what it's all about.

There's also a general sports forum this may be more suited to tbh.
