Acer laptop we have when we turn the laptop on, a screen promt appears

Launch startup repair (recommended) this and other options is start windows normally, When I try to start windows normally it just goes back to the same screen as mentioned above,

Launch startup repair(recommended) start to check system for problems but then says windows cannot repair computor automatically,

either one I choose does not sort the issue, see below what appears

which state's, startup repair cannot repair the computor automatically, it gives option to send information about this problem(recommended) and other option is don't send,

os Vista, don't have a recovery disk, question could I install win 7 onto laptop would this sort out the issue, dont need to keep any doc's,data on laptop etc

    any ideas ,thanks

You can install windows 7 yes. It's probably not a hard drive failure, yet, anyway.

Can't stress this enough, the source of that error is more times than not, NOT SHUTTING DOWN THE PC PROPERLY. Cutting power to a PC, "Forcing" A Hard Shutdown, or letting the battery cut out, Hitting Reset, etc. etc. are all wonderful ways to screw up not only your software installation but on occassion can do some bad mojo for your actual hardware, which is designed to be shut down in such and such a manner, not be forced off. Brownouts for example will sometimes do more harm to a PC than a full on Surge will.

Shut Down your PCs, Properly, and on a Regular basis (at least a few times a week, every other day, etc.) so they can Update, so they can do what they need to do. When they can't do what they need to do (and they need to do things during regular boot ups and shut downs) then you're going to encounter weird startup issues like what you're experiencing.

Forced Shutdowns are for emergencies only, like spilling something on your keyboard, or an imminent power surge, or when all other attempts to solve your issue have failed (eg. if your whole system has been frozen for hours, without hard-drive activity). Anything else just requires patience.

if you are going to install windows 7 make sure that there is nothing important on your harddrive because you will lose everything if you format. if it is a windows 7 upgrade disc then you can upgrade to windows 7 without losing any of your important files.

also can you get into safemode ? I think it is the f8 button. if so tapp the f8 button once every second at startup and it should bring you into safemode. does it load up ok in safemode ?.

well if you are sure that no important information is on your laptop hdd then i would recommend dumping vista and install windows 7. windows 7 is very stable now so it's a good deal better.
