    Greetings all!

Just wondering can anyone give me any info. On music at UCC?
After reading the Trinity post I have really been put of going there..

So, overall is there a healthy balance between Irish trad music and classical? Does anyone know many harp players in UCC?
What's the atmosphere of the music department like?
    Long lecture hours?
    Relationship between lecturers and students?
Any info. On the entrance test?

    General stuff like that!
    Any info. Appreciated! :)

    Regards,

    Potential BMus/ Music-Arts student!

I'm not in it myself, but I am a musician and know several people in the course that're going into 3rd year now. From what they've told me they love it, enjoy, don't have many complaints at all. not sure of specifics or anything though!

There are two Irish harps in the music dept and you can take harp as a class (and get credits for it).

The relationship between lecturers and students is very good, it's quite a tightly-knit department as it's quite small so it's easy to get to know everyone.

As regards to classical and trad, they LOVE trad musicians. They lap them up, lots to do if you play trad.

As a classical musician, I have to say, classical wise the dept isn't fantastic, but it's definitely improving. There are lots of classes to take if you're interested in early classical music or baroque. Off the top of my head I can think of classes centering around J.S. Bach, Handel and Vivaldi.

If you're interested in the experimental side of things there are some really interesting classes in composition, minimalism, computer tech classes etc..

There are also many other genres and areas available to study; North Indian Classical Music, Ewe drumming, sitar, Gamelan etc..

OH yeah, there are loadsss of classes if you're interested in Jazz and pop, harmony classes, ensembles and general classes.

    Short but sweet post.
    Hope this was useful!

    Cheers! Great post!

Seems to be a lot more broader compared to other uni's!..which is great!
    Hon the trad-heads!
