Wanted to get an 08 S Max but over my budget

Have seen a Renault Grand Scenic 1.5dci, 70,000miles, full service history - any issues that I should be aware of with this car? How much should I pay?

I own a 06 Megane diesel and before that had a 04 Megane petrol and if I were you, I'd stay away. I've had a lot of electrical probs with them both, some fixed under warrenty and some not.

Both mine have full service histories with main dealers (with the exception of the last service earlier this year when I went to an Independent) but that doesn't matter. 1.5 seems low for the Grand Megane, it should really be a 1.9.

    Look for something else. Please.

Does it have to be diesel?

Back in 2005 had a new 1.5DCi (85) Scenic - was okay to drive and very economical. Plus the are damn practical - very clever space useage.

BUT.. after the screen was replaced due to a crack the auto lights and auto wipers played up for ever onwards.

I'd point the finger there at the screen fitter, not the Renault, wasn't it working fine before the new screen went it?

Have been looking out for 'roomy' motors myself and think the Zafira fits the bill in a number of ways.

Oh I agree.. I think there was moisture in the sensor housing.. I guess I was tryin to say the older cars with gadgets "grow" problems overtime.

I was in a very interesting car recently - Citroen C1.. no gadgets. I can imagine they will be come sort after in the future as bangernomics cars as they are so simple (in modern terms). Also I rang the little blighters neck for 300kms (it loved it) and still got 58mpg!

+ 1 to that, i used to fit windscreens and these types always got extra attention at the end to make sure lights and wipers all worked as they should!!

To the OP question, i sold lots of these, the earlier models had alot of electrical problems, window regs(may still be problematic, not sure), the dash display used to go in most of them ect but they are so practical its unreal, they are GREAT on juice (not so great if you like to go a bit fast on motorway) very comfortable and if you go for a good spec one you get so many extras. I took one from work on holidays the year before last just for the space for the kids and all our stuff and ended up driving it till i sold it a month or so later! Look around at a few you like and haggle as many dealers as you can to get the deal you want!

Hence my question about diesel. In not mega miles the 1.6 Zafira is a worth looking at, with few of the problems that can blight modern diesels. Not very exciting but nothing in this class is.

We were completely put off the Grand Scenic by owners, mechanics, tow truck drivers.

We too were looking for a '08 diesel, looked at every option and preferred the VW Touran 1.9tdi we are very happy so far.

If it's an 08 Diesel and you want a smaller engine maybe look at the Citreon Grand Picasso 1.6 HDI diesel.

SMAX we found out of price range, maybe Mazda 5 or Verso but they don't have smaller diesel engines. Zafira we just didn't warm to, no real problems to mention.

Personally speaking, warming to (m)any of these kinda cars isn't straightforward :)

For me, with picasso/zafira/scenic type cars, its a head over heart choice.

2 mates have one and my sister has a standard Megane DCI.
The 2 lads are bringing cases against Renault after replacing injectors, window switches, turbos, injectors again, engine blocks, electrics etc etc etc etc.
They have spent 1000's of euros and still have issues with them.

Unless its brand new or very close I would avoid big time.

You are right - they are built to be practical for families.

But, I have had a Berlingo - which I warmed too so much I kept it for 4 years! And along side it a Picasso GP.. which is hard to fault. It really carrys 7, does 47-48mpg (Auto), tows the caravan and has so far had no faults - just gone past 3 years of ownership.

My brother has an S-Max - which does drive better - but cost 30% more in the first place!

Thanks for all the replies. Went to view the Renault for a second time today. Told the car was valeted, still had dog hair and smell in it! Main Renault dealer! Nice drive but not this one.

Like the Grand Picasso, manual, so many imports out there - wary of independent dealers.

We test drove a Grand Picasso from this guy below. Nice guy and seemed ok, cars were immaculate low mileage from Citreon UK. Might be worth a visit to decide for yourself. Not sure where you are though, he is in Greenhills.

Do yourself a favour and dodge the Renault.

Major electrical problems, windows, dash, etc. Huge bills and long waiting times for parts.

    Cheers,

    Cheers,

What? Why would you be waiting any longer than other cars:confused:

I hear this thing of Renault parts being expensive from people (usually middle aged/older lads with man down the pub opinions of Renaults) but I've never found them any more expensive than anything else comparible.

Also this silly scarmongering is gettign ridiculous. Implyign that every one of them falls to bits.

At its worst, the easily accepted least reliable Renault in recent memory is the Laguna II that had something like 33 faults per 100 cars (similar aged transits had 35 btw), Thats everything that could fall under a warranty issue, regardless of how big or small.

In 3 and a half years of ownership our 2005 Scenic has had no surprises in over 100,000km's bar a broken lower ball joint (that was goign for a while but I put on the long finger :o ).

It does seem to be a magnet for damage though. It's had 3 minor low speed dings that needed new panels and had 2 hit and runs in car parks that cost hundreds to fix.

We find it infinately more comfortable and easy to use than the Zafiras we've had as hire cars. After half an hour of motorway driveing 3 of us in the car were lookign to stop and get out (all Renault drivers at the time). Not to mention the horrible squareness of the Zafira.
