What's with these stickers that won't unstick?

I got a humidifier recently and it had a pretty ugly sticker right across one side of it that was really only for use when on display instore. It would not come off.

I got some batteries that come with a little plastic case, and the plastic case came with two stickers on it, (with price and other info in different languages) - not a big deal, but as they were ugly i decided to remove them, but i could not get the sticky residue off. Now I have a sticky plastic case.

I have a new wooden plate that had three of the damn things on the bottom and now it sticks to any surface I place it on.

My mum says she got the sticky residue off of the jam jars she uses with standard hand soap, after soaking and detergent did nothing.

Using hand soap I made some progress with the (now black with dust) residue on the humidifier, but i still can't get it clean. It didn't work on the plate either.

I saw some people suggesting petrol or wd40 for glass on another thread, neither of which have much place in my kitchen.

I wonder what genious invented this new sticky gack that won't come off, and what is the reason for it? I was happy enough with stickers that came off. I thought they were a great idea.
