Connect Macbook Air to TV problem

Ok so i bought one of these http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180645610884&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2579wt_907 and have a god HDMI lead but when i connect them to the tv all i get is my old Apple background???? I have a new background and it wont come up, when i open a page it wont come up on the tv???…

When i turn the laptop off it goes off and when it comes on this background appears again but wont let me bring up anything else on the tv??? So it is connecting on some level but wont let me view anything...

Any ideas???

System preferences > display > turn mirroring on.
