    Just wondering if there were any games similar to this franchise? Perhaps in a modern light?

    Not that Iknow of but there are plenty of Mods for Empire TW on http://www.twcenter.net/forums/

    can add units & tech plus make some major changes to gameplay.

    Have a look at King Arthur -The role playing game and its sequel. Probably not as polished as tw but still decent.
