Just a quick question, simple yes/no answer.

If someone buys a hackney and plans to use it privately, and there's already tax on the car, can one use the remainder of the tax on the car, or does the tax become invalid once it's in the new, private, owners name?

Not too sure but a friend of mine bought an ex hackney with 9 months tax paid on it and drove her away without being called up on it.

I'd say play dumb if a Gard at a checkpoint points it out.

By right you should contact the tax office and notify them of the change. It would be the same as driving a 20 Ton truck that was weighed as a 8 Ton truck.

The last car I purchased had 9 months tax left on it from the previous owner. He was a disabled driver..
