Car worth about €9000. Third party quote of about €1000 and fully comp €1700.

What would peoples advice be? Im leaning towards third party as looking at the €700 difference plus a €300 excess in the event of a claim I can't see much value. I'd have breakdown assist and windows with the third party also.

9000 is a lot of money, if a crash happens you will regret it so so much. If you can afford it then I would recommend fully comp, also shop around!

There is no way in hell there should be that much of a variance between TPFT and comp.

I would definitely shop around mate, there should only be 3,maybe 400 quid difference tops but if the TPFT quote you have gotten also includes breakdown and windscreen cover then there is something seriously out of whack.

Yes anytime I got quotes the difference was at max 25% between the two. If you look at the weather we got last winter it's worth seriously considering fully comp if you need the car on an everyday basis, a small patch of ice and you could write it off fairly handy.

Had a look around a couple of other places. Im with 123 and their the rates they were offering. Insure.ie 1400 for fully comp or 1200 for third party. One of the problems is I only just paid for a years insurance with 123 on my current car so could I cancel that and go with someone else? Would I lose out on much or would they refund me based on the time i've been covered?

Was that third party or third party fire and theft?
I'm surprised there is so much of a difference between fully comp and third party tbh. My insurance this year was about €1500 fully comp, it was only about €70 more expensive than third party fire and theft

I am fascinated to know how that premium came about. 700 for accidental damage? Mind me asking if you've previously claimed? Are you entering the sum insured or is the web site calculating it for you?

You must be mad. I wouldnt dream of driving a car of that value without comp.

You need to ask yourself. Can you afford to have a total loss on the car the week after you get it? If you can and are happy about that, go ahead on the Tpft.
    If not, get comp.
If I couldnt get comp at a decent price, I would buy a €1500 car.

Wouldnt be the end of the world if I was to crash it but would prefer not too. The way I think of it is an extra 700 against 9000 works out in gambling terms that if theres a one in 12 chance of me crashing it and completely writing it off then theres value in getting fully comp. If not then no.

I really shouldn't think of something like that as gambling though!! :pac:

As others have said €9000 car is an awful lot to gambling on not having Full insurance in the event of an accident. If someone hits you you can get the car repaired while you wait on the incident to be sorted out by the insurance companies where as with 3rd party the garage won't repair it till liability and cash has been paid out.

I think if you are in first 14 days window, you can cancel it and get "full refund minus - administration fee + government levy"

If policy is older than 14 days, you will lose 10% of annual policy cost for each month. and of course they will deduct admin fee and levies from refund.

I would shop around for better quote. 123.ie(rsa) may be putting you to higher risk group for a reason and others may not.

Consider it this way. You would only have to pay that 700 difference for 2 years max then your premium should be more normal with little difference between 3rd party & comp. So therefore, is it worth risking a total loss of 9000 over 2 years driving for the sake of 1400? would say not.

I know a guy who argued that he didnt need comp as if he had a crash, it would be some other idiots fault. The very next morning (true story) he took the side out of the car leaving the car park. I did laugh.
