Grant renewal A LOT less then last year!!

    Hi

Just got a letter for my grants renewal today and really not happy as it's a lot less then last year! Wondering could anyone shed some light on it for me:

I applied as a mature dependent student and I live more then 45km away from college (200kms!). I was working before I started my masters for 2 years so when I applied for my grant originally I was told to send in my P45 so my earnings would be discounted from the application and just my parents would be counted. I then received a grant of full fees paid and a maintenance of 100% (3250).

Today I received a letter stating I would get full fees and only 25% maintenance (780e!!) When I called the grants office they said they counted my earnings in 2010 (from Jan 2010 until Aug 2010) and did not discount them like they did in the previous year!! Does anyone know can they do this? Should they not look at the fact I'm earning nothing now and haven't been since Aug 2010! Can I appeal this??

    Any advice is much appreciated!

Did you send in the P45 you got in August 2010? If not, send it in now to the grant authority and ask for a reassessment.

If you did, send it in again with a letter saying you're appealing the decision to include the income amount shown on the P45 as reckonable income. If they still uphold their decision, you can then appeal directly to the Department of Education.

BTW I'm not aware of any rule change for 2011/12 about disregarding income shown on a P45. Good luck!

the p45 discounts the income you earned in the year the p45 was issued, say 2010 for example. so in looking at your application for 2011 your p21 or p60 in respect of 2011 is looked at and this includes all income your received in 2010.

i think that the p45 rule is badly implemented. the current way its implemented means when you have just finished work and might have money in the bank your income is discounted. then a year later when money has been marching out of your account the p45 is no longer taken into account.
