    Hi

I am just wondering what is the best way to go about upgrading the Bios on a laptop. I know i need to download the bios from the manufacturer but does that mean the manufacturer of the Bios or the manufacturer of the laptop itself.
I have 2 Laptops that i think could do with an upgrade. My laptop is a Compaq Presario V6000 and the other laptop is a HP Pavilion DV2000. Both Laptops use a Phoenix Bios. I am not too familar with upgrading Bios and know it could cause damage if done wrong. I would appreciate a step by step guide from anyone who is familar with doing a Bios upgrade and if at all possible on how to backup my current version of Bios in the event that i need to revert back to it.

    Regards

    Colm Towey

The procedure varies from laptop to laptop, there should be instructions on the manufacturers website.

As you rightly say, a bios update has the potential of bricking your laptops mobo, which may or may not be recoverable.

The risk should be very slim but it is something to be aware of - generally you would only update the bios if you absolutely need to.
