Changing DAW's

So yesterday my computer blue screened on me and after several save attempts the only thing to do was format the bitch and reinstall the OS.

Thankfully i do regular backups and all my songs, vsts, sample libraries and project files are on my harddrives so harm no foul.

I have however decided to change DAW's while the chance presents itself. I have been thinking about it for a while and figured this will be a nice reason to just start from scratch with something.

I had been using FL Studio and was quite happy with my output...there were pretty much constant compliments on the quality of the sound i was getting from it but i found i had gotten a little complacent or bored or something...so now that the Fates have presented a reason i am jumping ship to Ableton and will give that a crack.

So, when's the last time you switch DAW's and why? Are you happy with the change or did you go back to the old ways?

I'm basically in the same boat as you mate. Using Fruity Loops and pretty happy with it, but I just find that the sound quality I'm getting isn't really the same as I'd hear from people using Abelton.

I've been using FL for about 4 years now, is it gonna be that difficult to make the jump to abelton? I've heard its essential that you have a midi keyboard for Abelton, I have one but i won't effin work. :/

I don't think it will be that difficult (i hope) it seems to be well supported with tutorials and walkthroughs so hopefully it will be smooth sailing.

I'm looking forward to getting more from my MPD as using it with FL was a bit of a pain in the ass.

I use ableton live suit 8 and max/msp to create my sounds, form musical blocks that form my audio, basically anything creative composing weird goes on in ableton/maxmsp

anything to do with arrangment/ rough mix bit of a balance and eq what not happens within logic

best of both worlds, i dont think anyone will ever find one daw to suit them

you wont regret the change. i started out with fruity loops and eventually moved to ableton, never looked back not even once. ableton is a whole lot better in my opinion

You do know the argument that one DAW "sounds" better than any other is a myth right?

Changing DAW doesn't improve sound quality.

I jumped ship from Sonar to Ableton Live around version 5 of Live. I had only been into the music thing about a year back then. I don't think you should switch from FL if you've invested a lot of time learning it.

FWIW, in my opinion, the best things about Live are:
quick mapping (of basically anything) to midi devices
session view as an "playable" sketchpad and arrangement tool
built in devices/browser etc all in one screen

I think there is definitely something to be said for sticking with what you're comfortable with. A lot of the time when you get an idea, it's about getting it down as fast as possible before you lose it.

Knowing your equipment inside out, whatever it is, is the only way to get that done imo.

I recently dumped Ableton 8 in favor of Logic Pro 9, and I gotta say I'd never go back. I much happier now :) - I love Logic's work flow and has some quality FX and plug ins. I'm also much happier with the sound I've been getting out of it too. But that's just my subjective viewpoint. :D

That said, it's really just about personal preference... They all do pretty much the same thing and it's really about the producer at the end of the day.

I think in general that is true BUT as an example, the Reason sound engine is not very good. There is a huge difference if you rewire it as opposed to their own mixer. I am talking pre record versions.
