hope its the right forum for this question

I have an eircom router the Zytel model so its causing me a few problems
I plan to set up a movie library on a buffalo linkstation live server 2tb and stream to my apple tv
I was told to get a router with the following spec
BT connection as its going to an eircom phone line
    n wireless
    801.1
    150 or 300 nbs
before i go shopping what would you recommend as a router, not too tech savvy myself,

    thanks

I presume by eircom you mean ADSL rather than cable?

There's not a whole lot of high-end ADSL modem/routers nowadays. Most of the good high-performance routers are just standalone units. So you might be better off to get a separate ADSL modem (or use your existing modem/router as a modem only) and then you have a better choice of good routers.

What type of movies do you plan on streaming? 720p? 1080p? It would be a good idea to check the largest typical movie and see what the total bitrate (audio+video) of it is.

Thanks for the reply but as I said I'm not too tech savvy so it doesn't clear too much up for me

I live in a 10yr old house so the router is connected to the phone socket in the wall as is my home phone
Not sure what adsl are but probably what i have
or what or how to check the total bitrate

So what would this mean in relation to your post
I thought a lot of people might have similar phone connection for Internet so might be able to suggest a router for what I would need it for

What you're looking for is a fairly standard spec for a router, ie. 802.11n. I don't stream, yet, though I'll give it a go.

You're talking about streaming over a wireless network so I'd keep your ADSL modem. ADSL just means the standard for delivering broadband to your home. You have an old (probably crappy) Eircom ADSL model. That's most likely doing 802.11g. That's a slower transmission rate.

I used a LinkSys Wireless Gateway in the past. I found it very good. It was an 80211g model though. I'd suggest buying any good quality 80211n wireless gateway, ie anything from netgear, LinkSys etc. should be grand. Throw away your existing router and plug in the new one. Make sure you collect relevant settings off it first.

Right now I've moved to UPC so I'm forced to use their crappy cisco cable modem. it does the job but it's 11g so I've installed an Apple Airport Extreme and am bridging that to the cisco router. That works well as well and I get wirless N from the Apple.
