    eircom Group today announced Phase 1 of a planned multi-year rollout that envisages the provision of fibre based services to one million homes and businesses across Ireland
    Phase 1 of the plan will see upgraded infrastructure delivered to 100,000 premises by summer 2012.
    This will involve an initial investment of over €100 million, upgrading the existing copper access network with fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the home (FTTH) technologies.
    The upgrade will provide an open access platform to enable all Operators provide significantly faster broadband speeds and introduce exciting new services such as Entertainment services over the enhanced eircom network.
    Specific speeds will vary according to the technology used. FTTC will support speeds of up to 40Mbps and beyond, while FTTH supports speeds of up to 150Mbps.
    eircom Wholesale will communicate further detail on the fibre plans to Wholesale customers in the near future.

    It comes as no surprise that anyone living anywhere than a large town are effectively screwed.

    Don't assume that even large towns (such as, for instance, the largest) will see any benefit from this for at least a decade or more. After all, it is just an announcement. I expect to be still on the two tin cans and a piece of string excuse for a telecoms service (on which my broadband connection is struggling to maintain 2Mb/s) for some time to come.
