    Battling the Beast

Following the success of the Beast of Ballyhoura over the last 4 years we are proud to announce that the Beast is back for 2011. We have a few changes this year with the most notable change being that of the experienced team from Causeway Coast Adventure Racing Club taking on the planning of the event and running it in association with Ballyhoura Development Limited. An exciting new route awaits offering lots of challenges along some of Irelands highest mountain ranges, most beautiful rivers and taking in some of Irelands finest historical and heritage sites. Are you ready to meet the Beast?

The event features the Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Race, a uniquely Irish 36 hour non-stop race across the ancient & magical surroundings of counties Cork, Limerick & Tipperary. Mixed teams of four mountain run, bike, kayak, abseil, orienteer & shoot. Navigating the best route to win, prepare to meet your demons during this event designed to push each team to their limits (and maybe even beyond them). The Beast of Ballyhoura also incorporates the 7th All Ireland Inter Services Challenge to unearth Ireland’s toughest service men and women. Are you tough enough?

The Ballyhoura Blitz will take place on Saturday July 30th 2011. In the past the Blitz has been a race designed for individuals but with the current plans and new for 2011 you'll be able to enter as a pair. The pairs class will have a very short/basic orienteering loop (approx. extra 5km) on the run section which teams will have to navigate to a few chackpoints with the use of a map before picking up the marked route again. So if you're looking to gain some experience in adventure racing this may well be the race for you. Solos should expect it to cover a distance of approx. 40km consisting of 10km hill running, 30km of mountain biking on the world class Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails taking in most of the brown & white trails. The white trail has one new upgrade already open and another section is closed for upgrade but should be open in time for the event, why not sign up and be one of the first to race over these first class new trails sections. Pairs will have a little bit longer run as they will also have the short orienteering loop. Both the races will involve some adventure terrain & competitors should be prepared to get wet and mucky. The Blitz should offer a good introduction to the sport of adventure racing minus the kayaking.

Update:The Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Weekend takes place over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, Jul 29th–Aug 1st 2011.
Entry for the 2011 Beast of Ballyhoura is now closed, we are still taking entries for the Blitz and will continue to do so up until midnight Thursday. To enter the Blitz simply click on the button below.
