The dirt (filings?) collects mainly in the oil filter, not the sump.

Thats the lazy way to do it IMO.
As you rightly say, it won't have drained any build up/deposits which will eventually form on the bottom of the sump.

Also, if they aren't arsed lifting the car to drain the oil you'd have to wonder how well the under side(suspension/exhaust/oil leaks etc) is being inspected during these services.

@polod I used a sucker-out-the-dipstick on my Volvo for a couple of years and I kid you not I saw a gradual deterioration in the state of the oil being sucked out. Last time after I used it I opened up the sump plug and a further 1.5 litres of oil came out!

I reckon the success of these units depends on the arrangement & location of the dipstick tube -v- lowest point in the sump.

I still use the pump to remove most of the oil (for convenience) but I always drain out the dregs via the sump plug.

Even opening the plug doesnt get rid of alot of the crap, I was suprised at the sludge and general gick at the bottom of the engine when I took it apart. The metal swarf tends to accumilate on the sump plug if its magnetic, theres a surprising amount of that too.

Sludge build up over time is normal but metal swarf is not. If you have visible swarf then something is not being lubricated!

Thats what I thought, maybe why the engine needed to be rebuilt, its second oil change, first after road driving is next week so we will see what the story is there. Since its a fairly old engine design, Id expect a small amount of swarf but not alot.

Oh its a mini, so the Gearbox and Engine share the oil, Id imagine most the swarf is from bad gear changes.

is it common practice now for garages to pump out the oil instead of opening the sump plug? never knew such a thing existed!! how do you make sure they do it the 'correct way'?

+1 as Nissan doctor said its a lazy way allright. I always use the sump not because with the gush of oil coming out a lot of the would be crap will flow out.

A lad I know turns on his car for 2 seconds after the oil is drained to let out the last bit. I wouldnt chance it though..
