    Hi guys,
as the title states i bought a car in the uk recently. its a Jan 2009,
I was wondering does the vrt check check all the bits that an NCT would?
I know that the exhaust middle section and gearbox subframe are welded together so i want to know will i need to fix these before VRT'ing it?

I imported Plenty of cars and they made no physical checks of the vehicle. The last one was about 3 years ago though. I know they now deal with VRTing in many NCT centers but wouldn't have thought it needed a once over, especially if its not of NCT age (2007)

oh i know in the past they never even looked at the car. but i mean with the new VRT check will they check the structural integrity of the car. Also does anyone know if these points will actually cause an NCT failure??

Rules have changed so much recently hopefully somone that has brought in a fresh car that has gone through the NCT centre for VRT'ing can advise.....afaik it has to be roadworthy but does not get a full NCT test done.

The only check they make at the NCT centre for the VRT is to ensure the car you present is the car you have the documents for - i.e. the VIN number and engine number.

    4. What is involved in the Inspection?

At that test centre, the vehicle will be examined to ensure it matches the various characteristics described in the accompanying documentation for example, vehicle identification number (VIN), registration number (in the case of a used vehicle) make, model and variant, engine size, number of doors etc. If the requisite documentation is not available at the time of the examination or the vehicle details do not match the documentation, the vehicle will not be registered and a re-test fee will be payable on return with relevant documentation.

When it has been established that the vehicle is eligible for registration you will be presented with a document containing the vehicle details which you will be asked to sign confirming that you wish to register the vehicle as outlined on the declaration. Following confirmation, Revenue will assign a registration number to the vehicle and this will be issued to you by the NCTS on payment of the tax due.

Please note that a second visit to an NCT centre as a result of incorrect or missing documentation will be at your own expense.

    From the NCT site.

So yeh its still only about making sure they get enough money out of you. (making sure your not paying for a 5 door 1.6 but its actually a 3 door 2ltr coupe). Checkin Vin seems to be as much detail as they go into.

Brought a 08 in from NI a few weeks back and had it VRT'd. Only about the money and checking the VIN. Had wondered myself if I need to request an NCT appointment? Think it applies after 4 years old?

you dont need a NCT TEST but you will need to satisfy the NCTS that the car is roadworthy. For an older car, an MoT cert is acceptable for this, otherwise they will call you for an inspection before completing the registration process.
In the case of an almost new car not needing a UK MoT i expect a simple visual check would be the most they would do.

    Nope

I duty paid a car that was out of MOT for a long while. NCT Centre did as mentioned above. Checked that it actually was the car mentioned in the registration Certificate, VIN, engine number etc. I had to wait until I got my documents through before booking the NCT. That's the first time a test was run on it.
